Default My Faceplated T56 experience

i installed it today. Since i read other peoples threads about them, i knew exactly what to expect

shifting straight into first will clunk a little. i found shifting into 5th gear, then back into 1st solves that problem

shifting normal makes a clunking sound while going into gear
downshifting without rev matching will make a clunk/sort of grind sound

solution- double clutch it and/or rev match. doing this makes it go in smooth and noise free

1/4 mile runs/fast shifting- OMG i love it. just like ive read before- the harder you drive it, the smoother it goes in

for the hell of it i tried powershifting. that isnt a problem, just keep your right foot flat and bump the clutch while shifting, goes right in

theres no noise while cruising in any gear.

i will get in-car video as soon as it stops raining and is dry enough so i can get traction.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my T56 right now.

What exactly is faceplating?? Do you replace the blocker rings with something else??

Not if you already practice double clutching with your stock tranny and double disc clutch.

Why would you do that with a stock transmission? That's what the synchros are there for.

Interesting.

Was faceplating cheaper than getting a stage III build from a place like Six Speeds Inc?? Because if you did that you could still have a fully synchronized transmission for street use, but they are built up enough to take the abuse from the track as well.

Faceplating is a very neat concept that can be very effective for a racecar. We offer it as an option for $650 during a rebuild, but we don't recommend it to those who drive their cars on the street much (or at all).

Is that because the noise or the wear factor? I planed on getting it done because the noise doesn't bother me plus i will double clutch and skip gears 1st 3rd 5th, also using the 5th then 1st for stops. I usually drive 10-15k a year on the car.

let me be clear on this, it doesnt make any noise while your in gear, if you dont rev match it will clunk into gear.

it can be operated quietly. it does not clunk at high rpm shifts, it goes right in.

i have my beater for work and i hardly drive my t/a anymore. mostly for track duty and whenever i feel like driving . after this shitty weather calms down here in NJ, i will get an in car video with a few different scenarios.

Ya if you double clutch does it still make the bang sound or no? I realize when your already in gear it does not make any additional noise.

Because the synchros are for ****, and I have a double disc clutch and a full Detroit locker in the rear. If you DON'T double clutch when downshifting in a curve you get a very exciting twitch into oversteer.

Learn to double clutch, Stage III faceplate your tranny, never worry about tranny life or shifting again, and take pride in the fact you daily drive something that most people would be scared of and can't drive .

No need to double clutch is you know how to heel-toe

A face plated transmission can be drive on the street. Its only a matter of taste as to how anoying it can be. For me, the things what would normaly **** me off in a daily driver ie. noise, rattles, clunking trans, make the weekend car more fun.

I can't decide between a faceplated t56 or th400 once my stocker goes. My car is pretty race oriented and I only drove it about 4000 miles this season. What can you expect doing your standard stoplight start up to cruising speed (not wot). I double clutch/heal toe and all that fun stuff already. I just don't want to make the car so unbearable that I don't WANT to drive it.

My size 14 shoes = FAIL on heel-toe. You can usually use heel-toe technique while double clutching, when you go to rev the engine to match rpm, put the tranny in neutral and release the clutch pedal before you rev, then go to the next lower gear.

Faceplate your T56. It will be less of a headache and fewer parts to buy than the auto swap. Not to mention more fun to drive!
