Default Which manual trans. in turbo high h.p.street strip car

Anyone have any good information or opinions I guess on t56 vs tko for a twin turbo street car. A 66 chevyII,probably 7-900hp mostly for fun on the street but will see a little friday night action at the drag strip for fun.The tko will fit a little better, is a little cheaper and still has overdrive but I will use which ever is better. Both probably need some upgrades at this power level with sticky tires. The tko is rated higher in torque and h.p. for stock trans.but after modification I don't know.

The Tremec TKO series unit is strong but most of the time are very notchy . The t56 is strong as well and shifts better but is heavier . If I had to choose one over the other , I would take my chances on the T56 .

Just curious, why dont more people use the tko ,especially in swaps and retro fits.It seems that the smaller size and multiple shifter locations would be great in swaps. Its rated pretty strong too,Am I missing somthing about the tko?Any one have one, good or bad results?

The main reason is the TKO's are well known for being notchy . I personally believe its how you break them in and with what oil you break them in with . People I know that buy them brand new and run GM syncromesh from the start seem to not complain as much as someone running the wrong fluid or buying a used one that was not broken in properly .

I would think, and this is just an opinion, that some may think going from a 6 speed to a 5 speed is "downgrading" because of the lack of the 6th gear. Now, this would be the case if you already had a 6 speed, again, assuming. Now, if you were starting with nothing (like me) I can't really answer that. I jsut know that I wanted a 6 speed, so I bought one. Maybe it was the case of never having a 6 speed before is why I did it? I am not sure. I have had a Tremec, and it was a good tranny until I started upping teh power and RPM's. Now this was an old school Tremec (3550 or 3650 still can't remember which). I do have a friend that has the TKO 600 behind a 408" SBF with some giggle gas. Motor made 602 HP on Pump Gas with out the dope flowing. He has got the 250 pills in his plate setup (carb) but has yet to be dynoed, but has been 10.00's @ 145 MPH spinning it's *** off. Trans had held up so far, but has not been on slicks yet. Once to the track, and the rest is on drag radials on teh street. A little notchy, but not bad.

I've sold TKO 600's to people making well over 800 rwhp and they hold up fine with the right clutch set up . I've sold non Viper T56 units to people making upwards of 750 rwhp in a F body and they have held up fine as long as their clutch issues are good .

On the other hand , you always have someone that could tear up a tank with a plastic hammer and those people can trash either a T56 or TKO with a lot less power .

Anyone else have anything to add? Tko new is about$22-2300,T56 is over a $1000used and then add viper upgrades about $25-3000 according to who does it and the extent of the modifications. Is the t56 worth that much more? The torque capacsity of the tko is 600 lbs.ft.the f body t56 is rated at 450lbs.ft.

Where are you coming up with $22-2300 for a TKO? I see them all day long advertised for $1800-$1900. Realistically, dollar for dollar, you may want to go with the TKO though, unless you just want that extra gear. Strength wise, unless you fork out the big $$, teh TKO is a more viable option.

D&D has TKO 500/600's from $1850

I think clutch problems will be more of an issue than either transmission at high HP levels. That being said, having a 6th gear really is nice when DDing a car with deep rear end gears.

There are clutches out there that will hold big power now but they also cost big money! Its much cheaper and usually makes a faster car to go with an automatic but for a play car the stick is just so much more fun.At 7-800rwhp with twin turbos I would run a 3.23-3.55 rear so the five spd. would be fine,in fact sixth gear would be almost useless .There woul'd still be plenty of overdrive with the tko.I am just trying to learn as much as I can about both before I settle on one for this project.
