Most people get rid of it and seem happier with it removed. I removed mine when installing a Tick master cylinder, had to pry it off, as I wasn't intending to replace it I didn't try to remember how it came off unfortunately. I checked my Haynes and it doesn't cover replacement of the return spring.

Personally, I can't deal with the stock M/C without a good spring. If you move over to a Tick M/C, that setup calls for taking the spring out, which is one less thing to worry about and maintain. (The Tick doesn't have any flop in it and doesn't need the spring.)
