Default Removing pedals, replacing clutch return spring?

I searched but didn't find much...My clutch return spring is broken. What's the process to getting the pedals out to replace the spring? And where can I get a new spring?

Its a real PITA. Plan for a 2 hour job your first time. The part number is 10278874 and can be had from any GM dealer.

After this post, you'll see people telling you that you don't need the spring at all. While true for some aftermarket master cylinders, IMO - on a stock system its required. Otherwise you'll get a limp/floppy pedal.

Yea my pedal has some play and it squeaks when I press it. 2 hours, that's not a big deal. Car isn't currently going anywhere. So do I still have to drop the pedal assembly? I didn't see that in the links.

Thank you for the help. I see you've helped everyone on the other threads. Now in the future when someone has the same problem you just show them this thread.

No, you just have to take off the lower IP cover. The pedals are not removed.

The spring is actually way up behind the dash, almost behind the speedometer. When I did the job, I had to lay the seat flat and lay across it upside-down with my head under the dash. I've found that really long needle nose pliers (12") help. You can do the job with normal pliers, but you'll get more tired hanging upside down under the dash and trying to get your hands up there.

I did take the lower IP cover off. This is a tough job for me- I'm 6'6". My arms are long so it's hard to get them up in there. Although I CAN see the broken spring when I'm under there. I'll have to give it another shot tomorrow.

Yea, I had an easier time of it because I'm short, 6'5". You'll definitely need extended length pliers. I picked up some super cheap ones specifically for the job and they worked well. Although, the job is still a PITA and getting leverage to twist the spring in there takes some time.

Easy thing to do I did a customers car last week I will save you some time and head ache.

Take the new return spring in a vise and compress the spring, take two beefy wire ties and zip tie the spring in its close position. Then lightly un do the vise. The spring should stay at a compressesd size then after you removed the lover knee bolster u can install the spring. Then take a razor blade or dykes and cut the ties.

Easiest way I have found to them. If you try to man handle it in there u will be there a while hope that helps

IMO - nothing worse than a limp "pedal."

I have a broken spring and am having some difficulty trying to get it out. I LoL'd when I read about laying the seat back and going upside down because that's how i've been getting in there. To get it out can I just take my dykes and cut the damn thing? theres almost no room to fit a had up there and mess around with it. I'll let the dealership put the new one in I think. the car is my DD so I'll have to be careful about limp pedal for a little while but I can manage.

As many of us here that have an aftermarket clutch assembly, I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't score a free spring (gm direct is about $30)

You need extra long pliers like in post #6, above. Then you need to remove the remaining arm from its busing. Once you do that, the spring will come out. (You have to remove it side-first. Middle-first won't work.)
