Pretty sure I broke somthing… 2002 ws.6
Bought a pretty much bone stock 2002 t56 TA ws.6 a couple weeks ago with 108,000 miles. Been ripping it around everywhere since and it’s been the most fun I’ve ever had in a vehicle. About an hour ago I was on my way to another town about 30 miles away as soon as I got on the highway I floored it, was in 5th gear at about 5800 rpm with the needle going past 150mph on the Speedo when my SES started flashing and when I looked at my temp gage it was reading 260 in the red . After that I let off completely till 70 mph and stayed there the rest of the way. After that when accelerating even a little bit in 6th the car would start shaking. It did okay coming into town and got me to my destination only noticing slight shaking while accelerating in the rest of the gears. I’m in a meeting at the moment, my car is sitting in the parking lot and I am kinda freaking out. How bad does this all sound ? Just wondering what yalls more experienced thoughts were on this thanks .

I believe they are capable of 162-163mph in stock form, at which point they hit the factory speed limiter. But given the space, I think they can hit those speeds. And 150mph is no problem at all.

Did the ones without Z-rated tires get a lower MPH speedometer? I know my '93 Formula came with a 110 MPH speedometer due to being optioned with H-rated tires, but I'm not aware of them ever putting a lower max speedo on an LS1 car. And yeah, any stock LS1 car will do 150 MPH without a speed limiter. Ask me how I know

The lower speed limiter was issued to examples that weren't originally optioned with Z-rated tires (hard to believe they could be had this way, but some folks actually did order them like this). All of mine, 1998-02, were all factory set at either 162 or 163 MPH (can't remember which). The old HPP3 tuners would allow the limiter to be raised to 255mph as a maximum, but none of mine were set like that from the factory.

OP doesn't seem too freaked out if nothing new being posted since Tuesday, and it's their only post!
No mention if they did anything with the car after buying it and before taking it on a top speed pull. I wonder if any maintenance was done since purchase or if they bought the car just to beat on it until it dies? Without an explanation of what is going on/happened other than the flashing check engine light and vibration experienced in 6th gear (without mentioning speed or RPM) leaves the speculation door wide open on things it could be.

@Y2K_Frenzy Agree this is a highly likely outcome if the heads warped or gasket deformed but without knowing how long it ran hot or if his gauge is somewhat accurate it's still speculation. Easy enough to check the oil and see if there is any tell tale signs of water there. I would start from there as well and work my way down the list of possibilities.

I'm 100% certain that the older LT1 cars would get the lower speedometer, even with a V8, if they didn't get the Z-rated tires (as mentioned above by LS1Formulation). But I think it's correct that all the LS1 cars got the same cluster no matter the speed rating of the tires.
