T56 will not downshift from 6th to 5th gear.

My 1998 camaro z28 m6, has a major issue. It will not allow me to downshift from 6th gear to 5th. If I want to go to 5th while I am in 6th I can only downshift to 4th gear then upshift to 5th gear. What could the problem be ????

Could be a bad syncro ring or excessive wear on the 5-6 shift fork .
