Cool Jericho behind a LS motor

I am in the process of building a Land Speed Race Car that will be powered by a Boosted Forged LQ4...

We have a Jericho trans out of a Nascar, a Tilton 3 disc 7.25" sintered metallic clutch, Mcleod SFI Bellhousing, but are trying to decide which is the best route to go for a flywheel.

Any advice is appreciated...

Thank you

I like the "low ground clearance" setups offered by Tilton and Quartermaster. Though, I'm not sure what they offer for flywheels for LSx engine. I'd be a little scared of running a button style clutch with a full flexplate on a land speed car.

Do you think the extra inertia of a heavier flywheel would be beneficial?

What type of car is this going in?

The extra inertia would not be a problem....We plan on no clutching it at 6500 rpm.....I just have never used a button style flywheel.

The car is a 98 Z-28....Full on Land Speed Car. All the safety stuff. With a 9" rear.

Thanks.

Like I said, buttons are awesome...as long as you can use a reverse mount starter and the correct bellhousing. I'm sure there wouldn't be enough room for that in an F-body. I'm just not a big fan of sandwiching a stock flexplate between the button style flywheel and crank.

I'll look around a bit and see what I can find for options.

I'd give Tilton a call and ask them what they recommend for the clutch you already have. I came up with part# 51-4452 which is an OEM sized flywheel for a 7.5" clutch. By the looks of it, it still apears to be a pretty light piece.

Here is the catalog page: http://www.tiltonracing.com/pdfs/DL_pg_68.pdf

Call Tilton and as them for a list of distributors, or visit their website. You could also do a google search for that part# and see what comes up for resellers.

I sort of went thru this scenario a while back. The problem with the Nascar type clutch is it won't alow you to get the eng/trans really low in the chassis if you are running a dry sump setup. This may not me an issue for you and your application. I was able to get a 5.5" triple disc clutch set up. There is a Tilton flywheel for this application but i don't know the number. With the smaller flywheel/clutch combo, you must run the reverse mount starter. Since this is a Land speed car, the starter may not be necessary.

The 7.25" triple disc setups are pretty indestructable. I used one for years in a 600 hp GT1 road race car with no problems. That will probably work great for you, they are on or off, not streetable. I really like a light aluminum flywheel for road racing, but for what you are doing, I would go with the weight of a steel flywheel. Smooth and steady acceleration.
