T56 Carnage

T56 Carnage
About a week ago I posted the thread where I swapped my friends 2002 SCSB Truck from a Auto to a T56.
After the install and Hydraulics were bled we took it for a test drive to check everything out.
This was how it went..
1st: Smooth as butter..
2nd: Smooth aswell..
3rd: grinds like a bitch..
4th: same as 3rd..
5 & 6: shot to **** too..
Reverse: works fine.
So i start playing with it.. shifting slow while shifting it into 3, 4, 5, 6 when the Engine idled back down after I would push the Clutch in. I found them to go in smooth so that narrows that down right there to a Synchro problem.
Well my friend drove it around for a little bit and 3rd locked him out. I drove it and got it into 3rd with a little smack of the Shifter, so that made me think there is a problem with the Keys.
Today I tore it down to find this..
On the magnets there are all the Keys for the 3-4 Slider, and the 5-6 Slider. All the Pads on the 3-4, 5-6, and the Reverse Forks were like the ones pictured there. the 1-2 Fork Pads were intact, stock plastic. I found the reason the keys had come out to be that the Springs on the Sliders were installed incorrectly.
Also there was enough RTV in the Tranny to seal 6 of them with..RTV was everywhere..
The Input Shaft was loose as hell too..it was improperly shimmed.
I found Carbon Fiber Synchros in the Tranny aswell, suprisingly they are still good so I'm holding on to them as a backup.
My friend ordered the Tick stage II Kit and I'm rebuilding it with that, and a new 3rd Gear cause it's trashed.
This T56 was bought from a member on this forum and said to be in "good working order" I'm going to get into contact with him and find out who built this epic fail.
Be careful what you buy guys..

Well I re-asembled it and found even more damage to this thing..
Inbetween the Case Seams where you RTV it there was little bits of metal squished in there, they looked like little bits of Gear Teeth. I guess whoever built it RTV'd it and they got stuck in it before the Case was slid on. I honestly want to find who built this thing and ask them WTF..
I cleaned them out and cleaned everything up and ground down any of the raised parts before it went back together.
As far as it running now..that thing it smooth as butter..the smoothest T56 I've ever driven in my life. When you are going along it feels like the Shifter sucks itself into each Gear.
I'm looking forward to the one that I built for my Camaro.

It's not very hard to rebuild..then again I guess it depends on how much experience you've had messing with things..for me it was pretty easy.
I used the Tick Performance Stage II re-build kit for this one and the one I built for my car aswell. It's a very good kit, and they aswell as a few of the other T56 gurus here helped me out with any questions that I had along the way.
With yours it sounds like you have a definate issue with the Keys in 4th..and a Synchro issue in Reverse, or worn pads on the Fork.

I offer Rebuild kits as well if you decide to do it yourself. If you need someone to do it, we handle that as well.
If it grinds in 3rd AND 4th, then would say key or pad is the problem. Now, if it locks in 4th gear, then probaly key issue.
Either way, tranny needs to come apart to fix it....but does not sound like to bad of a problem, no.

its not to bad cause i can some time get it to go in smooth in 3rd. it only locked up a few times about a year ago. and i had it rebuilt by some one who only rebuilt t5 mustang trannys. i had to take it out 3times for him and it still is not right.
