Is it in the shifter or transmission?
So about a week back my shifter started feeling strange. It feels like there is no resistance when in neutral. Upshifts are normal, but when downshifting it will sometimes pop out of third after the 4-3 shift. Transmission has about 6k miles on it after a rebuild with all the goodies. So is something possibly wrong with the shifter? Its a SLP with about 80k miles on it, installed about 4-5 years ago. I'm really hoping nothing is wrong with the transmission after spending $1300 on it and the hassle of swapping it out.

Hard to guess with the symptoms.. Do you have a stock shifter to test? Does the SLP shifter have stops on it? Sounds like the return springs in the shifter have broken, but that wouldn't really explain popping out of 3rd gear.
When you say "all the goodies" were put into the rebuild, does that include billet keys and bronze fork pads?

This is what I would do...look at your shifter stops (if so included, as I am not familiar with SLP shifter) but if so, try and adjust them out some.
Also, do what 85mike said, if you have stock shifter, put it on, and see what happens.
If you do that, and still no better...
then popping out of a gear could be a key, synchro, engagement teeth on the gear itself (3rd), fork, or pad.
The reason it probaly is NOT a key or fork or pad is because if you have that problem on 3rd, it would possibly do it in 4th as well (they share the same parts) HOWEVER, that is not always the case, and why I said it COULD be.
But, if it continues to do that after you swap shifters or adjust the stops, then tranny is gonna need to be opened up...

Still, check the easy things first like the shifter stops and with a stock shifter.
Good luck..
