Default Grinding noise in 1rst gear ? // TRANS fix NIGHTMARE story

To long didn't read, scroll to bottom:

--

A couple months ago I took out my transmission and sent only the unit to a local reputable transmission shop. (i thought it'd be cheaper this way, and i was replacing my clutch while i was down there anyway)

I had the 3rd gear and all the syncro's replaced. (Took him ~3weeks, $1300 cash)

When I put the transmission back in i noticed that the gear stick would not go back to it's regular position.

I then called the shop up and he told me that it is not the transmission's problem and that the indent springs should be in the shifter.

Upon further investigation the difference between the corvette MN12 and the regular t56 is that the MN12 has it's indent springs inside of it.

I took it out again and sent it back into the shop. (took him 2 days and the shifter worked)

When i got it back, i put it in, and everything worked.....except first gear!! It had a loud grinding noise that increased with the rpm's.

The owner of the shop came by and checked out the car. He told me it can only be the transmission since there was no noise in other gears. I took the transmission back out and sent it to the shop. (this was 4 weeks ago)

I then left for college.

Recently my dad has called me and asked me whats going on with the transmission.

I didn't know he had not finished and returned it yet. I tought my project was just ready, waiting in the garage, until i come back for break.

I called the owner to see what was up.

He said he took it apart and cannot find anything wrong. He has 30 years experience in his shop and has done many t56's. 1 of my buddies got his built there and it's still going strong. I don't know about MN12's

Before i sent it in everything was in perfect working order except 3-4 shift. I got a syncro grind.

To fix this new problem he siad he will grind the gear down.

Now i don't know what he did but i told him it shouldn't be the gear since it was fine before i send it in.

I asked him if there was anything else that could be wrong with it.

He siad that someone told him that the cluster may be bent but he has never expierence that in all his years. I then asked him if he could check the runout.

He said that he will first file the gear down unless i will pay for another cluster. WHAT?!?!? I didn't break the damn cluster. If it was broken when i sent it in, why wasn't i informed upon the initial transmission tear down. Which it wasn't because it worked.

I told him to go ahead and fix what ever he thinks is wrong.

----

What could possibly making a grinding noise when driving in first gear but not in any other gear? Starting from 2nd is fine.

I feel like i have been ripped off. Is filing the edge of a gear 1/8 inch safe? Will it weaken my gear?

If it doesn't work when i get it back, i will take it to another shop, and try to seek legal action.

What makes a noise driving in first gear but not in any other gear, right after a transmission rebuild or just in general?

Would it be a warped cluster or shaft? If someone would know that would be great.

I will call in and see what the runout results were.

"Just to add in 4 weeks ago he said "

That he ordered the wrong 3rd gear. Well he ordered the right one but it was miss boxed. This new gear was too thick. He then said when he was pressing it in he chipped 2nd gear. << "2nd?? what". Maybe he mixed up and meant to say 3rd?? I don't know.

Would this potentially bend any shafts and cause this grinding noise.

Nothing adds up in what the shop is telling you.. There is no reason anything needs to be ground down inside the transmission, everything is machined to exacting specifications. If something isn't working correctly, then something was broken or mis-installed..

What year Transmission do you have? GM increased the width of some of the synchros in some 2005+ T56s and mixing parts between units can cause clearance issues.

Talk to the shop once more, and if you don't get anywhere, have a lawyer talk to them.
