Balance wouldn't really be a likely cause. Of course if the plate was sitting over-center as a result of a bearing that is riding the fingers thus keeping it partially released this could so some weird things. This is pretty unlikely but it's worth considering (though I personally think that this is an issue with hydraulics). Where is the engagement point relative to pedal travel?
