Without being more specific, I would say it's one of the bearings. The gears are helical and when the load is reversed, like on a down shift, the bearing can be on its way out.

Does it make noise on ALL gears when down shifting or just few? If the noise goes away down shifting to 4th, I would say the cluster gear bearing.

Then it's definately one of 2 bearings. Either the input shaft bearing or the main output shaft bearing.

I would not jump to concluding a concern with a bearing so fast. When downshifting the synchros speed up the lower gear you are selecting. When doing this a whirr type sound can be heard. It is normal to hear this synchronizer work.
It is quite possible to put an excessive speed into the clutch disc when down shifting so be careful. You are speeding the disc up by the ratio of the lower gear. If you engage the clutch at an excessive speed, following such a downshift,it is also quite possible to overspeed the engine.

Maybe try rev-matching your downshifts to see if it still happens?

2002sscamaro, have you driven a manual before? Do you know how to rev match during a down shift? If so, then I still say it's in the bearing. If you are rev matching, I would have to agree with calhoon.

I didn't say that to be a dick. I have ridden with PLENTY of poeple who don't rev-match when they downshift, and just let the tranny take it when they let out on the clutch.
