I got a lead on a 2006 corvette trans for sale. If I understand correctly a z06 t56 has the triple/double synchro mm6 gears with the one piece countershaft that will fit into a ssr tailhousing. Without buying the trans and taking it apart How can I tell if it is the mm6 gear set with the one piece countershaft? My logic is to buy this trans for the gears/countershaft, put them on a ssr mainshaft, then use the ssr tailhousing on my gto case, and create the ultimate homebuilt t56. Sound about right?

I have a 98C5 T56 that I want to use behind an LS1 making 425 flywheel HP in a 56 Chevy with C4 suspension and brakes etc...what parts do I need to convert from transaxle to transmission for this application ? Thanks in advance guys !

Look through the PDF write up in this thread and search this forum for the dozens of other C5 T56 conversion threads for help. If you still have specific questions, it would be wise to open a new thread unless you're building a 32-spline hybrid with your C5 and have questions not covered here.

The bearing races, splines and other machined features of the mainshaft and countershaft extension require matching synchros and gears, yes.
Examples:
A GTO, Vette, CTS-V countershaft extension requires the 5th / 6th from one of those with double-cone synchronizers and matching gears.
A 06-07 Z06 1-piece countershaft requires the 5th / 6th from one of those because the i.d. of 5th / 6th are reversed.
An F-body, Cobra, Viper countershaft extension requires the 5th / 6th for one of those with single-cone synchronizers and matching gears.
Example: I have a finished GTO 32 spline build. It was a core I bought without the rear components. So I used a Vette core countershaft extension.
The mainshafts are similarly divided; a triple/double cone mainshaft (GTO, Vette, CTS-V, SSR) requires gears from the same. A double/single cone mainshaft (Viper, F-body, Cobra) requires gears from the same.
The only exception is the 5-6 cluster driven gear on the mainshaft.
With this info, now you can read the PDF and the mainshaft pictures show differences that are the reason why the above is true.

Thanks for the write up. I have an 2006 LS7 t56 on the way and will be using the SSR mainshaft/tailhousing option.
Being this will be my first transmission build. What assembly/specs/guide would you recommend to rebuild the transmission?
I see some places online offer hand fitting the sliders and hubs. Where can I find more detail on this operation? I assume this is supposed to make the transmission shift better. What other handfitting can be done to make the trans shift better?
I have no donor other than the LS7 T56 and will need to change the shifter linkage. Do you have more detail on what needs to be chagned over or is that apparent from the rebuild guide?
I've seen a couple pictures of viper T56 transmissions on google search that have a billet mid plate with machining where needed for hydraulics. Does anyone know about these plates?

Assuming the Hybrid PDF Mike wrote doesn't tell you enough about the reassembly of the unit as a slip-yoke variant, or this being your first build leaves you in the dark, walk through other how-to rebuilds; there are a few if you search.
McLeod has made a few front plates. What benefit you'd see with one versus a GTO one, I couldn't tell you.

Anyone try something like this on the corvette tr6060 transmissions yet???? Also what's the difference between the mm6 & mm12 on a c5 or c6, besides the 1pc countershaft.

If I am using the SSR tail housing and want to use a 1 piece countershaft do I need to order TUEN4961 & TUEN4962 if I ordered GM 89060072 1pc Countershaft w/mm6 gear set? Parts numbers were taken from Mike's write up.
Thanks Mike for the great write up!

You need 1each of all the parts in that last section of the write up for a 1pc conversion, but you can reuse the 5/6 synchro from the 2pc donor if good.
