Default Manual Transmission Whine

Hey guys, I just bought a 2000 Camaro Z28 with the M6 and the transmission seems to have a "whining noise" when the rpms start to rise. I'm not familair with the T56 so I'm not sure if this is normal or not... I just changed all the fluids in engine, tranny, and rear-end too just to service it. If you guys have any ideas of what it might be let me know PLEASE!!!

Mine has a slight wine to it and i was told by JBA racing in san diego that it was probably my bearings in the midplate for the input shaft but thats just hearsay since it hasnt been apart yet and ive been driving mine without a problem for the last year.

The T56 is known for making some noise as part of its normal operation. Of course, because sound is so subjective, especially when described over the internet, it's hard to nail down without hearing it. Was the sound there before the fluid change? What fluid are you using? Are you sure it's coming from the trans and not the diff? Let me know a bit more and I will be happy to help with more info! Thanks,

the noise goes away in 4th gears or at least quiets down so i can barely hear it. and i run amsoil in everything i just inspected my rear end and it is the moser 12bolt with 373 and a posi and that to my surprise is not making any noise and is in good shape looking at the inside. the transmission when i changed the fluid the old didnt smell burnt so that was a good sound and yes the sound was there before the fluid change and also keep in mind that the car has only 59k for being a 2000 camaro and was previously used as a commuter and the guy didnt seem the type to beat up the car...

Typically this is an indication of the small (Timken SET16) bearing on the end of the mainshaft going bad. If the unit was ever run low on fluid, it can burn easily. When the input and mainshafts lock in 4th gear, this bearing doesn't turn and the noise abates...

Does this sound like the input shaft bearing?

Say I am driving 20 MPH and I full push the clutch. While the pedal is pressed, the noise starts as soon as you start moving the shifter from third to second or second to first and NOT releasing the clutch.

You know that sound you hear when you turn the steering wheel to either the full left or full right position and the power steering pump squeals. It sounds like that.

Never hear this sound when simply driving. I dont even hear it upshifting, only low speed downshifting.

Annoying as Hell.

FTR I am running Mobil 1 syn ATF. Could it be the fluid?

I should have mentioned in my post above that I have a Spec stage 3+ clutch. I just to determine if this is a tranny noise or a clutch noise. Its not really a whine. Its morea of a whirrr whirrrr whirrr sound only when the clutch is between engaged and disengaged.

WRD, I have heard similar sounds relative to a worn or bad pilot-bearing. It's worth a look. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks,

I have now convinced myself that it is not the clutch causing this noise.

This is starting to sound like a bad bearing. After asking around locally, many agree its the inpuit shaft bearing. I am going to pull the tranny and look at the pilot too. At least that will be an easy diagnosis.
