notchy feel mod
I just installed the 2 washers like the svt and corvette guys tonight on the trans. It made a really nice difference in my T56. I don't have smooth shifts but it is alot better for sure. I just did the advance auto washer thing and it took about 30 minutes. I searched and only found one person mentioning it and some saying not to do it. My results were good.

"I had done some research in the past about a mod that can be done to the T56 to make shifts much easier and smoother. The Z06 guys swear by it (They call it the Anti Venom mod...hehe). The mod is easier to do on a 'Vette than on a Cobra due to clearance issues between the trans and the tunnel on our Cobras. Maybe one of you guys can figure out a way to do the mod with the tranny in but I couldn't. Anyway, I just had the trans out of my car to replace the clutch so I decided to give it a try...and I'll be damned...IT WORKS! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOD! By all means, if you're doing a clutch and you've got the trans out, try it.
Here's the trick:
Remove the big bolt that is high up on the passenger side of the T56. The bolt will take a 15/16" or 24mm socket to get it off. No fluid will come out. No springs will fly out. Nothing catastrophic will happen. This bolt has a ball and spring setup behind it that applies pressure to a detent in the trans.
What you want to do is to shim out this big ol' bolt with a washer (or washers) by about 1/16" to alleviate some of the pressure on the spring. Go either to NAPA and get part #704-1357 or Pep Boys or Autozone will have the same washers as a Dorman Oiltite part #65277. These are 13/16" or M20 copper oil drain plug washers and the pack of two costs $1.79. Yup. That's all! Put two of these washers under the bolt I described and tighten it back up. YOU WON"T BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR SHIFTS!!! IT'S AMAZING!!!
My car has always been hard to shift...really notchy going in and out of gears. It always felt to me like hitting a wall in between shifts. I got the MGW and it helped a little. I've done the RP tranny fluid and I even did the friction modifier fix but neither one did much to help mine. THIS DID THE TRICK!!! Now it shifts smooth as silk. Try it. Bet you'll love it! "

WOW!!! I just did this and it feels great!
Attached is a pic of the tool I used to remove it:
15/16" 1/2 inch drive socket
1/2" to 3/8" reducer
3/8" U-joint
3/8" wobbler extension 3" long
3/8" extension 12" long
ratchet
I always wonder why engineers design something worse than it could be. The answer must be that they are trying to reduce warranty comebacks (Hey, my shifter feels loose!).

The detent bolt links up the shifter rod with the transmission. It is spring loaded. The problem is that it has too much spring pressure which means it takes more effort to shift gears.
The washers result in the spring having less effective pressure which in turn makes the shifting easier.

That bolt, has a spring, and a detent ball in it. From what I understand, the shift rail rides on it, and relieving the pressure, makes the rail move easier. This is in fact basically the 'antivenom' mod. There was a guy that was selling a special bolt that replaced the spring and detent with a solid bolt. I think he wanted like 70 bucks or more...until someone figured out that the washers did the same thing, or close enough.
I did this mod. And all it did was make my shifts feel sloppy and not as positive. I plan on removing the washers when my trans is out soon.
I read some positive results from the vette guys, but I just dont see it. Just makes the shifts vauge and not as tight. The notchiness sucks sometimes, but at least you know you're going into gear haha.
The good thing is, aside from having to crawl under the car and rig up some tools to get to the bolt, its easily reversable. So you wont lose much by giving it a try.

What shifter are you using and how many washers did you use? Most of the threads that I've seen that didn't care for this mod was either due to still having the stock shiifter or they used too many washers which caused the spring to be too weak.
