Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my 6-speed. When I'm driving slow or fast down the road in third gear, periodically the shifter will pop out. It did it on the stock shifter and I installed a Hurst shifter and it still does it. What causes this and how can I fix this problem. Thanks

Have your trannny looked at cause the same thing would happen to me in fourth and it turns out the owner before abused it heavily and the clutch was burned beyond recognition and the syncros were off. I would have a pontiac dealer take a look at before it gets worse.... Now i had to pay 2k to have the tranny replaced and a new clutch kit put in and also a new flywheel.

The problem is the 3-4 shift fork in the trans, its not going all the way into 3rd. It will probably need a new 3-4 syncro also. Its a fairly common problem, GM has a TSB on it and my 2000 did it since it was new.

Do a search on 3rd gear and you will find a lot posts about it.

your Hurst bump stops may need adjustment, if not, You are probably not putting 3rd gear in all the way, don't get lazy when putting it in to third. This may be your problem since it seldom happens to you.

I had the same thing happen to me last summer, My 3rd gear synco's were done, I took it in and they gave me a new tranny or it could be the stops like they have said.
