What Fluid for 6-speed trans?
I have a 98 with the six speed manual trans.
I want to change the fluid and was going to go with synthetic.........just wondered what others were using??? Redline, Royal Purple,etc..??
In my manual its says to use Dextron ATF, I know the new Dextron VI is synthetic.....should I just go with it?

There is alot of debate over this.
If you stick with a factory type fluid, the stuff the dealerships sell is supposed to be pretty good.
That said, I have had good luck also with both Red Line and Royal Purple in the trans.
Also, keeping clean, well bled clutch fluid can do wonders for shifting issues as well.
If you end up not being happy with whatever you fill the trans with, you can always dump it and try something else.
Hope this helps.

Here's a few threads I've found when asking the same question. Quite a few of the guys talk about how RP can eat up the stock blocker rings. I've never used it so I don't have any experience with it, so take that for what it is. I've been running generic Dex III and never had problems. I do want to try Pennzoils Synchromesh, supposedly it's the same stuff as the GM Synchromesh.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in my trans, and its been very good.
DO NOT run Dexron VI, GM had a bulletin regarding its use in manual transmissions requiring ATF, its not a suitable fluid for various reasons.

It was a surprise to me how much smoother the shifts were after I went back to cheap regular Dex/Merc fluid. CAM-2 fluid here after a year of Amsoil ATD and notchy upshifts until it warmed up, now it shifts smoothly from the start.

SEE !!! now I know y it say DEX III on the tranny sticker. I felt the same way. What brand did you use ? I use oreilly brand ( I heard it made by mobil ( not mobil 1 ). Napa gear oil made by valvoline.

I drained the Amsoil and went with CAM-2 Dex/Merc at $4/quart from the local parts store. Just whatever plain DexIII spec fluid I could find at the time.
If I'd found the Castrol Dex/Merc I would have gotten that...$14 for a gallon jug at Advance Auto.

When I installed the trans from a fresh rebuild, I used Castrol Dex/Merc. After a few hundred miles it was shifting smoothly...so I changed the fluid to Amsoil ATD. It's great fluid, but my trans hated the stuff until it was up to temp. Very notchy shifting.
