There are 3 things that can be manipulated to determine the torque capacity of a clutch: disk material (coefficient of friction), diameter, and spring pressure.

For instance, the LS7 clutch uses a relatively soft disk material, but with a large diameter disk (12") and moderate spring pressure.

A triple disk 5.5" carbon/carbon clutch uses a heavy spring and a material that increases is coefficient of friction as it gets hotter.

Make sense?

it all depends on the coefficient of friction of the material the clutch discs are made out of, and how many discs.

for instance, 2 8inch discs have 2x the surface area as one 8 inch disc.
therefore, a twin disc will hold more than the single disc.

i have the formulas somewhere left over from HP drivelines class on how to figure the holding capacity of a clutch just by looking at it, but ill have to find it.

each material has a Cf (coefficient of friction) sintered iron being the highest i beleive, and composite being the lowest. then there is some inbetween, some that have a better hot Cf than a cold, which means they hold more the hotter you get them, and like composite holds less the hotter you get it, and some that hold the same hot or cold like carbon fiber.

the reason for twin triple quad...ect discs is making a clutch that will hold the power and fit inside the bellhousing. if top fuel dragsters didnt have 6 clutch discs, their bellhousing and clutch would be 6ft in diameter.

Last I checked; No. Still in the pre-production stages.

Just thought I'd share how my monster stage 3 is doing in my 2008 C6Z06. This is from my other thread.
Well I took the car to Cecil county dragway today to see if I could get the car to hook a little better and get a new best. First pass the with the tires at 20psi the car bogged at a 3700rpm launch. I did a 1/8mi pass and shut it down. I came back up and did a 4000rpm launch and the car spun bad. I let the car cool down and tried adjusting the exhaust due to it was rattling on the driverside pretty bad. Came back up after some cool down and lowered the tire pressure to 18psi and with a 4000rpm launch the car spun again. I went back let the car cool down, dropped the tire pressure to 16psi hot. Launched the car at 3800rpm and the car pulled out with a little spin, the front end stayed up so I kept into it for a full pass. Heres the pass I was given....

60ft-1.631
330ft-4.512
1/8mi-6.876
1/8mph-105.41mph
1000ft-8.893
1/4mi-10.589
1/4mph-133.65mph

The best 1/8mph was 106.10mph so that was interesting. I cut a 1.57 60ft but I missed 2nd That would've been a low 10.5x or better pass. Then a mustang hit the wall (driver was ok)and then I called it a night. Theres definitely A LOT more in there and can't wait to get to test it out on a well prepped track and run it out more often. This clinches the #2 spot so I may give it a rest for a little bit then go to the track in December to put the #2 spot even further away for my Canadian sausage party Sebastl9x He promises that 2011 is going to be a fun year.... well until he finds out about my next few bolt on mods!

Pics for Proof

I'll post video later of the above run, but regrettfully part way through the launch the video camera came loose and was just swinging so it pretty much makes you see sick.

I want to thank the following people/companies.
Monster Clutches for the clutch to help make it all happen.
RKT56.com for helping with the driveline, clutch setup etc.

Some videos;
In car videos of the runs

Yeah, it's getting down to crunch time.

I'm going to need a clutch soon and I'd really prefer to go with a Monster Twin Disc instead of somebody else's.

Last I heard they were having problems with their machinist, however, that was months ago.

WOW!

Wonder why LS1Tech was not given the same respect as Corvette Forum. I know it's old news, but none the less:

Unfortunately we have had to scrap the 11/12" twins some may have heard about on tech, because of some technical difficulties with the engineers. So Steve has decided to go another route for the big hp guys with a 7.25" twin and triple. The prices, final weight, and holding power are still TBD, but I wanted to share some results on my FRC with it's sleeper 218/230 116 cam. It's still in there, but will be soon swapped for SNL Performance V4 cam. Just want to try one last time to go 10's with it since I've got more powa than before, as soon as the clutch is broken in. Will post graph and video tomorrow, the sound of it revving reminds me of a Carrera GT words can't describe it, but it's fun to try and put the "pedal to the medal"from idle and let off before the tach hits 7k! To be fair, not all of the gains can be attributed to the clutch as I did switch to a 3" off road x-pipe, from a 2.5" catted system. Matt then had to work his magic on tuning the car to idle with the super light clutch, but Steve has really done his homework and was impressed at how it has zero chatter(because of the unique design), smooth engagement(can easily be slipped) and a slighty stiffer than stock pedal(lighter still than all aftermarket singles I've run in the past) So the results were a gain of 31.7hp/26.8 ftlbs from the baseline, after loosing 24lbs rotational mass! It made 400ftlbs at 4k rpm and stayed above 350 all the way out to 6500! Just for giggles we made a pull with the belt off, incase I need the EWP for goal and it picked up 14/12 for a total of 451hp/432. Mind you this was done on my street tires(315/30r18 repos) normally I dyno on the drag tires which are ~30lbs lighter and make ~10hp more, so we probably could have seen 460hp SAE5 with only a 218* cam lol other mods include: stock 75mm MAF, ported TB, ls6 intake, PRC stage2.5 5.3l heads unmilled, 1.75" kooks, TI muffs

Nothing to the video, but it's titled Monster Twin Disk so.... Oh and it's dated 10/10 so take it with a tiny grain of salt.

Chris should have posted that on all forums, but he didn't. I've got three cars with 12" twins in them and multiple other vehicles testing various designs of our twin disc units we've got out there. I'll update people whenever Steve gets me the information.

Last week we put our triple carbon in Steve's personal car to test lift, release, engagement, etc. We'll be updating you guys soon.

I like the idea of small diameter triples. I've actually been thinking about where to find something like that as of lately.
