Default MGW shifter

Well i finally bit the bullet and ordered an MGW shifter today. the little research that i had pointed to that one of the others. I have driven a B&M one and absolutely hated it.

When it gets here in a few days ill make a fuuuul write up with pictures cuz i couldnt find any write ups or anything of the sort so hopefully i will make a good post.

Those who have been running the MGW, please let me know what your biggest pro's and con's have been

wow not bad. im never ever down in there at least messing with the trans or everything. I just recently had it completely built (to handle 900ish fwhp) so this is just the cherry on top of the cake

i have one in my vette and love it to death!!! best by far ever and you will be extremely happy with it. Ive never missed 3rd not even once with it.

Pros - really short throws, confidence in never missing a gear

Cons - Was a little stiff/hard to move thru the gears upon installing for the first few weeks especially going into 5th and 6th gear. Its like it took time for it to break in. Now it goes into every gear smoothly!

Looking forward to the post.
Let us know how the install goes!
Pics would be great as I have never seen one of these in a F-body.

You're going to get noise with any aftermarket shifter dude. It's not bad. Still the best shifter on the market for these cars.

No you don't. I have had a Ripper in my car for years, several buddies with pro 5.0's and i've never had ANY noise. I've personally never driven, heard one in person; but every thread i've read someone complains. They have good quality stuff, hopefully they get the noise issue solved.

My pro 5.0 is noisier than my friend's MGW in his C5Z by a long shot. My Pro 5.0 is not hitting the stops either. It's just an engagement click. The only people that could ever complain about shifter noise are people riding around with stock exhaust.

Demarco 313, I noticed the same thing with the MGW in my friend's C5Z. It was EXTREMELY stiff at first but after he drove it a few hundred miles it loosened up and feels fantastic.

Most people don't realize that MGW isn't just an automotive company. They are a super high end CNC machine shop. The founder's son made a shifter for his first gen camaro back in the day and his love of cars got them in the business. They rarely keep any pre-assembled units in stock and they sit in a little book shelf in the front office. Shifters are a little side project I guess you would say. They are local to me.

i didnt mean to come off like a dick, believe me i completely understand lead time and with a little bit of investigation post order i realized that shifters arent there bread and butter type of deal. Ive seen pics of all their work and their **** looks top notch, i really dont mind waiting for quality

I had a Ripper in my old 94 TA and it transmitted all sorts of transmission noise inside, but I hear the same sounds from the stock shifter in the 94 I have now, so I think this has more to do with mileage than just the shifter. Point being, if your transmission is even slightly noisy, an aftermarket shifter will probably amplify it somewhat.

I'm starting to not like my MGW. Shifting feels great, but I miss shifts on a constant basis now. I think I'm getting 2 or 3 and hit 5 or 6 instead, same thing downshifting, try to hit 5th and get 3rd, try to get 4th and get 6th. I never ever had that problem with the stock shifter. It feels like the gears are too close for 3-6 with the MGW.

And when I say I'm missing shifts, its not during racing, its every day driving to and from work. Its really, really frustrating. I'm thinking of swapping it back for a stock one that at least I know where the gears are.

I made a post a few threads down about the mgw install and I put up pics too. I opted not to take pics and put up a writeup because theres literally nothing to do when installing. 4 bolts , plop the new one down and reassemble everything.

I complained about the mgw a bit although the throws are short and notchy. few of my complaints are:

1. reverse is a bitch. Im a weakling though I need to hit the gym. I almost pull a muscle in my right shoulder every time I try to push into reverse because of the shift effort and akward angle.

2. Still miss gears.. oddly enough 3-4 is what im missing. Never missed a gear in my vette in 10 years and didnt have an issue in my 01z with a umi short stick that had a hurst. Makes me wonder if something is messed with my trans.

3. 1st gear looks like 5th to me. 5th looks like the lever is in another solar system. the shifter is far forward and to the right. it's annoying.

Still love it <3
