Spec 3 with 22k miles and still holding
After hearing such bad reviews on this clutch for the past 5yrs, I bought this clutch anyways because I figured most of the failures were due to improper installation, break-in, or just poor hydraulics.
For these past 5yrs I have gone through 1 stock master, but mainly because they can only take so much track abuse. I'm currently still running a stock master and the Ram slave I originally installed with the clutch. It still grabs hard as HELL and I really feel it's due to me properly installing the unit, breaking it in properly and keeping the clutch fluid clean.
I'm curious if anyone else has gotten this much mileage or more out of theirs? Also keep in mind this is a street/strip car that saw alot of strip until early 2009. It became my primary car due to an unexpected situation. It probably has close to a couple hundred track passes with launches varying from 3500-6200rpms plus city and hwy driving. More or less I'm happy with my choice and will more than likely go with another when this one finally decides to slip on me.
One more thing is that this car has always been a full weight car minus the jack and spare.

Mines was purchased from a friend used with probably 8k miles or so I think and I have put another 20k on it. No problems at all stock master and slave, hell it dosent even have a shim. Used it with stock flywheel (resurfaced) Spec 3 also

I've got 18k on mine, not much track time(I run a 10 bolt) and never running sticky tires(so launching on the street takes a lot of slipping with crappy tires)it's a DD car that gets a 1/4 mile pass every chance I get(just outside of town), I'm finding that it might be starting to slip after a few runs with no cool down, but with cool down time it's all good....I never thought it would last this long as I thought I was a little hard on it during breakin and it gets slip'd so much on launches trying to hook street tires, so it should be interisting at the track on the 26th...It's coming out this winter anyway becasue I'm sick of the unbalanced re-surfaced stock flywheel I installed and I've got a Tex Exo-skell twin disk clutch just sitting in the shop.

I put a lot of miles on my Spec Stage 3, easily sold it when I went with an automatic as it still looked good. Bob

Thanks for the review. I actually have quite a few customers with 60-80,000 miles on the Stage 3. I agree that clutch life is inherently related to flatness of surfaces (fywheel), proper installation, proper stage for your power output, and driving style. As always it's nice to hear from our customers. Let me know if you have any questions or product needs. Thanks!

The Spec Stage 3 is a nice clutch but it can chatter due to it's puck design. It never bothered me when I drove my Z28 with it, but you might consider the Spec Stage 3+ which is a full face design. The 3+ has a very smooth engagement. It is more expensive, but the 3+ also has a higher torque rating. Bob

i have a spec 3 and am putting only about 460whp and am slipping the clutch already. i broke it in correctly with a ton of stop and go driving and had the car dynoed today and it was slipping in 4th quite a bit. the hydraudics are bled properly so im not sure why this is happening....

I loved my stage 3 when i had my Trans Am. It had a much better feel, life, and power holding abilities, and quality when compared to other clutches I have owned. I will be buying spec again once I get around to buying a C5 someday.

Curt, slippage can occur for a number of reasons. I would be happy to talk with you about the potential causes and if you wanted to you could pull the kit and provide some pictures of the part for further assessment. Let me know how I can be of assistance. Thanks!
