Default Who likes their lightweight flywheel? I need opinions

I'm ordering a clutch today and am totally lost on whether or not to get the

lightweight flywheel or not? I've tried the search and seems like lots of

conflicting information. The car does go to the drag track occasionally..Will I

have to rev a lot more than normal to get the car going?

You wont have to rev it a lot but a little. Also depends on how light you go. 12lbs? 18lbs? Are you in stop and go traffice a lot?

It just something you will have to get use to. Just like anything else. I recommend it.

I love a lightweight setup, it does take a little getting used to.

I heard lightweight aluminum flywheels are prone to warping, so chromoly flywheels are better (though more expensive). Lightweight billet steel is a middle ground option.

Yeah I was just looking around trying to figure out who offered the chromoly flywheels, and the lightweight flywheels from Monster are. It's only $50 more which ain't bad at all. I think you'll like it. THINK, because I've never driven one. I'll try one the next time I have to buy a new clutch.

Here ya go.. give Jason a call. He has clutch kits with light weight chromoly flywheels that he will cut you a deal on. I have his stage 3 setup and I am cutting 1.5's at the track. I did more than 10 passes that night back to back and were all consistent. Shop around for prices and then call him. His prices will not be beat and he has great feedback from members here on the board. All positive! He is a sponsor on this board.

I wont be getting a lightweight flywheel next time around. Seems like the lightweight FW doesn't have enough momentum to get you off the line, causing the car to bog.

Actually, we sell a 1045 billet flywheel that is 18lbs, we used chromoly long ago, but, actually had issues with a few of them warping. Chromoly flywheels are not as expensive as the billet ones and won't last as long. We've learned this over the years and have adapted.

Give us a call if you have anymore questions.

Oh, that's interesting. The reason I thought your lightweight flywheels are chromoly is because of Byunspeed's website. All of your clutches there are listed as either steel or chromoly. Maybe they just haven't updated their site...

ran 10's on the monster stage 3 with 15 lb chrome moly flywheel, no problems and consistantly went low 1.4's.... I think some people just have to get used to them. They do require a slight bit more throttle but w/e.... it's par for the course.... revs a hell of alot faster with one though!

I have Jason's diamond stage 3 setup with his lightweight chromoly flywheel and it is awesome. I have no issues with it bogging on launch, I am cutting 1.6's on cheap nitto 555r's.

This subject gets over-analyzed way too often & blown out of proportion. It's really a minimal difference. Most aftermarket clutches have a pressure plate that is much heavier than stock, so a light flywheel will more than make up for it. For example, my Diamond Clutch kits all weigh right around 43lbs. This is the total weight of the disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. Keep in mind that I use the 15lb lightweight chromoly flywheel with all my kits. Then I weighed a stock clutch kit and it came out to 49lbs. That is only a 12% difference in overall weight. Its just enough to feel a noticable difference. With the rotating mass being 12% lighter, the engine effeciency is increased. The advantages that you will see include; better power transfer thru the drivetrain equating to a slight gain in RWHP, RPMs climb faster, RPMs drop faster.
Disadvantages are; Less weight will give you less momentum when racing. So it will be a little more tough to get a good launch.
However, the advantage of having better engine effiency by far outweighs this disadvantage.
Considering the few trade-offs when using a lightweight flywheel, it is worth it, hands down.
