Default weird smell

and i have no idea where to put posts like this

but my car tonight, after driving it moderately hard, had a burning smell coming from it. it wasn't a smell i was familiar with - in other words, not engine oil, not tranny oil, not antifreeze. when i popped the hood, i could smell the distinct burning smell coming from around the master cylinder area.

any clues?
