The only problem is no one makes Dexron III anymore. Read every bottle you can find, they all say recommended for use where Dexron III was previously recommended, etc. None say it is a GM licensed fluid. Every Dexron VI bottle says it is GM licensed whether it's walmart supertech or at the GM dealer.

GM replaced Dexron III with Dexron VI for automatic transmissions only.

For manual transmissions that called for Dexron III, GM now recommends Part #88861800.

Those are the facts, the bottom line is people are going to believe and use whatever they want. Thats why theres a thread about what fluid to use and why every month.

i understand that ,,but what im sayin is does anyone know why ?,, does it help the synchros slip more cause i found the thicker the oil the harder it is to shift ,,the thinner the easier ,,but atf seems to have more friction which would not allow the synchro to allow the gear change (synchro needs to spin freely when shifted, not stop)than motor oil ..

Ok so my understanding is that the "paper' on the blocker ring engages based on the amoutn of friction. So the more friction, ie thicker oil, the better they engage and function. The thinner the oil, ie synthetic, the thinner the oil the less friction the less the block ring wants to function or the faster it wears out. Thats why they recommend switching to the kevlar backed rings so you can run better oils and get better engagement. Dont quote me just my understanding

^ Thank you was just trying to figure out why atf would be a better choice than a low weight engine oil ,, just tryin to help everyone(op) for a better upgrade cause i know these trannys suck for high performance ,, so it helps the friction for the block ring but at the same time kills the synchro ... nice ..

Dex III is still available - there's just no GM dex III. I went to autozone and picked up Castrol for older domestic vehicles - meets all requirements for vehicles calling for Dexron III. I've not had any issues since switching a few years ago....

i just want to make sure there is not confusion on a couple things... Dex III and Dex VI are NOT the same, and SHOULD NOT be mixed (it says so right on the back of the bottle)

if you want Dex III the generic brands of ATF at any parts store meet the standards,... and thats what i'm using.

yes, but you still need to remove the fill plug to know when the correct fluid level is reached

I've used Redline D4 for years, including road course use. No issues to report.

Mobil 1 here but will be switching to castrol dex III before it comes out of the shop in the spring.

Anyone overfill their trans a touch to help keep the front bearings lubed on hard pulls? I saw something mention like this in the drag section and was just curious if there is any problems with that??

I recently had my trans beefed up by liberty gears in detroit and they recommended the mobil 1 atf...i ran that for the break in period then after doing some reading i decided to switch it to amsoil syncromesh... I personnally feel that it shifted smoother and easier by a considerable amount... made me enough of a believer to switch the motor oil as well...

i was told last year by a builder of strictly drag cars that atf was used because of mileage requirements lighter to spin through etc. he told me just run regular gear oil, someone else one time mentioned john deere gear oil some clear stuff its a lighter viscosity but runs cooler and still has the same wear indexs or something

Regular gear oil like 75w90? Please don't take advice from that guy, regardless of what he builds.
