Default T56 will not take 5th, and grinds 6th....whats wrong!?

my ss will NOT take 5th gear at all... if you try it will only grind, and if you try to go straight down to 6th it will grind just a little, but takes the gear... now, if you go from 4th, into neutral possision, let off the clutch, let the rpms drop to idle, then push the clutch and just go into 6th, it dosent grind... this is how i have to drive....IT SUCKS! ive had someone tell me that it was the 5th to 6th syncro assy. does this sound right?

LITTLE HELP!

And if you keep driving like that, you will end up needing a new 5th or 6th gear also. I bought a used tranny from someone that had a broken 3-4 shift fork and a worn out 5th gear syncro and they kept driving it. Well it ate all the clutch teeth off of 3rd gear and 5th. SO get it fixed soon, or it will cost you alot more.

It you keep driving it that price goes up
100 bucks for synchro assmebly and about that each for 5th and 6th gear.

Mrplow and Bugs are correct. I'm guilty of driving past the $155 fix until I needed all synchros and 5th gear. I'd drop the trans and get it to a shop before the repair bill get's any higher.

Last one I did which had that problem in 5/6 just needed fork pads. Synchro was fine; just a bit worn but within acceptable wear.

Diagnosis with the trans. apart is important.

Man, where are you getting your prices because I must have been jipped LOL. Gears and syncro hubs are about actually $150 a piece. I just put a new 5th gear 3-4 and 5-6 syncro assembly 1-2 and 3-4 fork and it was a total of about $550 shipped.
