Default gear/syncro wear----how to tell?

by looking at the actual gear (3rd) how do you tell if the syncro teeth are worn to much? the syncro teeth on all the gears have a little wear on them. It popped out of 3rd while coating. i found broken syncro keys laying in the bottom, maybe thats the cause? that and the blocker rings are pretty compressed. Also, is there any pics online anywhere of a torn down tranny? anything online at all? i downloaded the manual from tremecs site.
not very descriptive at all. I also ordered a steel shift fork. but i just need a pic or something to see what wear is normal, and what needs to be replaced.
thanx.

Look at the little Teeth that the sychro assembly slides onto.
are those teeth Sharp or rounded.
if they are rounded replace that gear.
Also if the gear is bad , so is the synchro assembly.
replace them both.
Puttin new blocker rings will help for a while but that gear and Assmebly will start to annoy you before long.

they are a little rounded. there was a bur on the edge of the 3rd gear, and the sncro assembly would barely slide over it, then i had to yank to get it off. i de-burred it and it slides smooth now. what will it do if i leave it? and being slightly rounded what will happen?
thanx.

They should be Very Pointed. Look like a V from the right Angle.
if they are too rounded what you can get is the occational feeling that it just won't go into gear. LIke you are hitting a wall.
If the Blocker ring stops the gear where it is halfway between where the Assmebly and Gear can mesh, it can actually stop there.
Since you have it open you should just go ahead and replace those two pieces.

It happens when you try to shift fast, and miss. You hear a slight grinding noise, and don't really think much about it until it happens 5 or 6 times and starts to slip.

BTW, if you don't get the synchros in right, you might as well buy a new tranny, 'cause your chit is never gonna run right again! The tranny is nothing to mess around with without a good amount of knowledge. I wouldn't recommend it to any back yard mechanic that hasn't torn apart and rebuilt numerous trannies already.
