Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of fluid to use in my 6 speed transmission gear oil or auto tranny fluid? I have heard tons of different things. HELP!!!

From my experience, ~ 4 quarts of Dexron III is the best thing to use. That's the factory fill.

Dexron III-compatible Automatic Transmission Fluid. There are lots of old school guys out there that are convinced that the T-56 should use gear oil, but they'd be wrong, and you'd be in need of a rebuild if you tried it.

The factory fill is automatic trans fluid, as previously stated. I however have been running Pennzoil synchromesh for yrs and like it quite well.

Yep Dex3 or you can use Dex6 too. I just changed mine & it only took 3 qts.

I added it to the bottom of the fill plug on the side of the trans. Or are you saying add 4 qts through the shifter hole & it shifts better with more fluid in it? Thats not the correct fill procedure. Why would you do that?

Tremec says to fill it till fluid(they recommend Dexron II, but upgrades are fine) just starts dripping from the fill hole. If overfilling works, great... I'm a little surprised it doesn't leak out though. I used Synchromesh in mine.

several trans shops have always told me to run 4 qts filled through the shifter hole.

I am sure filling to you spill works fine also.

and I would say it depends on how level the car is and etc etc, so I just stick 4 qts through the shifter and done with it. IMO

I changed my clutch April 2010 and drained and filled the tranny w/ Dex VI. No problems.

^ I wonder what the differences are between Dex 3 vs Dex 6? When the bottle for Dex 6 fluid says expressly NOT FOR VEHICLES THAT REQUIRE DEX III/ VEHICLES MADE BEFORE 2005 I wonder why you would choose that fluid? When I read that I passed and looked for the Dex III only. The warning is saying the two are not equivalent...

dex 6 is a thinner "fuel efficent" style fluid. Used mostly in 5 and 6 speed late model GM automatics. Also used in 06 and up Allison's found in the duramax trucks. I would not run this in a T56.

Filling it through the shifter is just easier, and is how I've done it for years. If you get all the fluid out, then it will hold 4 quarts through the actual fill hole as well (I did it this way my first time changing it).

I've had 3 different T56 cars and routinely gotten 3.75 or so quarts in through the fill hole.

yes me 2. It's not exactly easy filling through the side fill hole on the trans. It's a very awkard angle for me. I think next time I'm going thru the shifter hole.

I did the fill through the shifter hole thing for a while until I spilled some oil on my carpet doing it...then I bought one of these:

http://www.motiveproducts.com/catalo...nsfer-pump.htm

Makes filling through the side fill hole much easier and less messy.
