Default Troubling Transmission fluid change?

Hey guys, I just have a rather interesting problem that happened yesterday. I was putting in a new shifter with my friend, so we decided to change the tranny fluid also. We drained it out, first on a level floor, then we jacked it up from both the back and the front to drain. When we checked the levels, we only found about a quart of fluid had drained. My question is, do we have a leak, or am i sitting with 7 quarts now? We did everything we could to drain it all out. Any help would be appreciated. It is a 99 M6 WS6

Yeah, we did this last night and nothing came out hardly. I did mine a few years ago and it seriously exploded out of the drain hole. I had fluid everywhere. I am stumped on this. Either the car has a massive leak somewhere or this thing is running on 8 quarts of fluid.

A T56 holds less than 4qts. I always buy a gallon jug and a half a little bit left over.

That's what I thought. What I don't get about this is only a little over a quart came out the drain plug, but 4 full quarts went back in. See what I mean? It's either a massive leak or that transmission only had a quart of fluid in it. When I did mine I had a solid 4 quarts drain out. We were reading about the tailshafts leaking could that be a posibility? Both of us were completely stumped by this. I can't decide what is a worse scenario. The tranny only having 1 quart in it or now having 7-8 in it.

Yeah, rather perplexing, it drove fine all day today, and has been shifting fine, so I've not noticed anything out of the ordinary.

After some reading, I think the T56 can physically only hold 4qts. Can anyone verify this? If that is the case then that car only had a quart of fluid in it. That could have been a disaster waiting to happen.

Well there was a thread on here talking about that, and these guys said it fills to 3.8 before it starts to physically spill out.

Well, it appears you had only 1 quart in there. I guess consider it lucky we found out about it now instead of later when your synchros punched a hole out the side of the casings ha ha ha

This is why I have an auto...jk. It sounds like you were low on fluid.

If you fill it through the fill hole there's no possible way to overfill it since it will pour out of the fill hole (which is how you know it's full) If you fill through the shifter just leave the fill hole open so you know when it's full.

If the tailhousing seal was leaking, youd most likely have fluid spun all around that area. Sounds like someone didnt fill it right, or maybe it was slowly leaking from somewhere else..
