Default Stock main shaft

I was talking to someone yesterday and they told me the stock main shaft can handle up to 750 HP, and another person told me it could only handle 450 HP. What can it actually handle? Im trying to decide if i actuall need to swap the main shaft.

Rule of thumb is about 650. What I have seen in the past is the actual factory splined yoke twist not allowing it to compress properly into the transmission which puts everything in a bind causing all kinds of damage. Going to a larger splined shaft not only increases the strength of the shaft itself but usually means the wall on the matching yoke is thicker making it less prone to twisting.

I recommend my customers to consider it at around 500 rwhp as preventive maintenance but I have several T56 units floating around with stock main shafts making more than 650 to the wheels. It really depends on weight of the car, type of use, type of tire and how the car makes its power.
