Rattling that started today. Throwout bearing?

Rattling that started today. Throwout bearing? Tried the search. couldn't find a good fit for my symptoms.
Here's the short take:
1. Turn the car on and hear a rattle from under the car. Almost sounds like a loose piece of metal or when you have an exhaust leak. Seems loudest right when the car is turned on.
2. Rattles some in neutral regardless of clutch position.
3. When shifting gears, can hear a "whistle" sound from under the car. Sounds like the throwout bearing releasing.
4. Car shifts and drives fine. Only issue is the sound. It's loud enough to make me self-conscious.
Any $0.02 appreciated.
