Which side # goes towards the crank and which side goes towards the trans?

Your picture #1, which is the side where you can see the inner and outer bearing races, is the side that goes toward to crank. The closed side(#2) goes toward the trans.

On an unrelated note, i would like to state that the Mcleod bell housing is the biggest piece of dog **** i have ever had the displeasure of working with.
