LS with a T5 how to
Im looking into swapping in a 5.3 in my 91 Camaro. I wanna keep the original drivetrain setup with upgrades coming later, so what can I do to make this happen?
Things I think I know:
1. The crankshaft is .400" farther forward in the engine.
That's about it lol
So what's next.

Spend the $$ now on a T56. It will be cheaper in the long run. You can bet on the V6 clutch not bolting to the LS1.

I don't like the 6 speed. I'll have to change my torque arm if I do that and the t-56 is heavier.
There are kits to strengthen the t-5 which I will prob do.
McLeod told me I would need their flywheel and pilot bushing cause it was .400" thicker than stock. They didn't say anything about diaphragm bolt pattern though. I don't have the pieces in front of me and the local parts store doesn't have the parts in stock.

its about 50 lbs max weight difference.... 120 from the t56 to 75 for the t5. and beefing up the t5 is a lost battle, in the end your going to spend a lot of money in better parts and a custom clutch setup to make it work rather than just getting a t56 and having be a direct bolt up.
any stock gen III motor would blow a stock t5 to pieces, even a built t5 is not going to stand up the abuse from an ls style motor... best bet is to get a t56. easier, stronger, better mpg, and in the end cheaper....

T5 is super weak and thats why they never mounted them to a 350 from the factory (you cannot find a third gen with a L98 engine in manuel for this reason) it couldnt even handle the torque of the old L98 so a LS engine will make it last about as long as the 10 bolt would on drag slicks. plus you have way better gear ratios and double overdrive you cant go wrong

whoa calm down man you never mentioned in there anything about funds, you also asked about a tko which is more than a t56... hell your dropping in a 5.3 into a 3rd gen I'd think youd have a little bit of a budget for a better tranny... like it has already been said you can build the t5 and then blow it up or just buy a t56 in the end the latter will be cheaper if youre that worried about money.

I just wanna make it work because my budget is going into the engine and I want to be able to drive the car while I earn the money to drop on a t-56.
When installing a t-56 there are added parts to buy like a new torque arm, not sure of anything else though.
Also, unless I could find a 0.50 sixth gear, t-56 it wouldnt be much advantage, except for strength, over the 5 speed, to me

Never seem to get a straight answer to this. Seems to me an upgrade would have its place on the road course or autoX. 50 lbs for Trans, what about internal rotating mass? Couple with an AC delete is 100 lbs roughly. Also like the G-Force gear splits available, but reality this is not a strip Trans in a heavier car like a Camaro.
