Default Clutch Slipping?

Today I was driving on the highway in 6th gear and I went to pass a slow moving car. I didn't bother to down shift I just stepped on it and the engine rpms shot up and I heard a bad noise from the tranny and the car did not accelerate. I then put it in 5th and it took off but still did the same thing but not as bad. Is this a flywheel or clutch issue or is it time to rebuild the tranny? 97 trans am t56 92k

It really depends on a lot of things is it a stock clutch? or has it been replaced if it was replaced did they do it right ( new flywheel pressure plate throwout bearing) it shouldnt constitute atranny rebuild if its slipping in all gears at lower rpm's was the car heated up from traffic or hard driving at all?
