Default Attempting to rebuild a T56, can't get the counter shaft extension out

I've read through the sticky and it just kind of glosses over this part. My T56 is a Viper (from a Viper, not Viper spec), but I assume it should work in the same general way.

I've removed everything off the output shaft, and everything up to the 5-6 fork on the shift rail. The sticky says it should just "pull out" but hell if I can get it out. It's stuck in there.

Do I have to take the entire transmission apart to get this "cluster" of gears out?

I'm only really needing to pop a new 5th gear on, so I wanted to avoid taking the entire transmission apart.

Here are some pics for reference:

Absolutely any help would be appreciated. I really would like to have this thing back together tomorrow, if at all possible.

That's a 1-piece countershaft.
Rather than pull the shift fork and the extension with both gears & synchro as a unit, you'll have to pull parts from it in order, starting from the rearmost end of it.

If you got the correct 5th gear and have adaptable puller tools, you have an easy job ahead of you.

Oh ok, I actually pulled the gear about half way off, but wasn't sure if I was supposed to or not, so I pushed it back.

Sounds like it shouldn't be too difficult from here. Thanks.

Got it off.

I put the 5th gear on it, but theres a TON of slop, it's literally not touching more than 50% of the shaft.

The bearing fits fine on the shaft, but the gear is pretty big...

You probably bought a 5th gear for a normal 2pc extension, which goes on in opposite order as the 1pc gears and so have different IDs. You need to order a viper specific 5th gear.

Opposite order? so the 5th gear is closer to the front of the trans and 6th is toward the rear?

Any idea who might sell these gears? I can't seem to find a different part number than the one I have 18-86-086-004 from thegearbox.

EDIT: TR6060 a 1 piece Countershaft?

On the shaft in the opposite order. The ID of the gears that go on the shaft first are larger to allow them to slip over everything else on the shaft. The 2pc, you take 6th off the extension shaft first and 5th second, so the ID of 5th is larger. The 1pc you take 5th off first, then 6th, so the ID of 6th is larger on the 1pc.

You will probably have to call a tremec dealer for the correct gear, most won't have it listed online. The late model 1pc T56 and tr6060 use double cone synchros on 5/6 and the gears, etc will not work on the older single cone viper 1pc.

Oh damn, yeah, I've been typing this into Google with every possible word combination I could come up with, and nothing. I guess I'll be making some phone calls tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the help.

The driven gears are no longer available from Tremec, anyone ever here of converting all the OD gears over to something else? Anything like that possible?

Did you try a Mopar dealer?

Check Ebay for any viper T56 part outs?

A good machineshop take a set of f-body drive gears and machine/sleeve the IDs to mate with the viper 1pc shaft?

Its a step backwards, but a normal Fbody 2pc counter+extension will work with new Fbody 5/6 drive gears.

It's a step forward and costly, but a C6Z06 T56 1pc counter can be exchanged with the viper, but you'll have to get new 5th, 6th drive gears and a new double-cone synchro + blockers..

I was thinking the latter of your suggestions, but... would the C6Z06 1pc need all new drive gears (or just 5/6), then would those drive gears work with the normal gears(1st,2nd,3rd,5th,6th)?

It should, but as reported here:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...onversion.html

There may be some differences with viper input shaft model years that you may want to verify before dropping dime.. If compatible, only 5 and 6 drive gears should need replacing to match the double-cone synchro of the C6Z06 T56 1pc counter.
Note that you would have $1200 or more into this conversion....

Yeah, I'm going to avoid this direction for a while, lol...

I think Gforce makes a Viper tail conversion with helical cut gears. I've seen vague mentions of it on Viper forums I've been browsing. If anything I'll call them and give them a shot.

I might try and call Tick and see if they have anything that could work.

I found a 5th gear, would the Magnum drive gears work with it?

The Magnum is a TR6060 and would also be a double-cone gear, like the C6Z06 T56 unfortunately.

Well, the only reason I ask, is because the fork and synchros are on the countershaft side (between the real 5th and 6th gear), and those gears just move the driven gears.

I don't really understand synchros and stuff, I just have a very basic understanding of how a transmission works.

EDIT: How can you tell the difference between a single cone and a double cone?
