Default Anyone shipped a tranny?

I am shipping my tranny to DDPerformance for a rebuild. They said to use UPS or FedEX and "put it in a box and package it real good." I'm just wondering how a 130lb tranny is suppossed to not fall out of a cardboard box. Is their anywhere I can just ship it out on a pallet truck freight or something? What method did you us to ship yours, what did you put it in, who did you use, where did it go and how much did it cost? Thanks. Mike W.

Also, I called DD last week and they said at first it would be approx. $450 for the parts according to my problem + $250 labor. I called them again today to find out about shipping it and got a different guy and asked him the average cost of the transmissions they repair and he said about $1200! That is a lot different than the $700 the first guy told me. What do you think.

DON"T USE FEDEX GROUND!!!

I shipped mine to D&D from Florida with them and they lost my tranny for about 3 weeks. Everytime them, nobody seemed to care that they had lost it. It took quite a while of calling at least twic a day to find it. It ended up being in a lost package site in St Louis with a number of other transmissions.

A few others here have had similar experience with Fedex Ground.

I even took the time to make a custom crate out of plywood and 2x4s. They ended up busting the tranny loose from the 2x4 mounts that I bolted it to and broke the crate all up.

Check with some of the local freight carriers in your area and just strap it to a pallet. It cost me $110 in shipping from D&D to Tampa Fl with a trucking company.

The cost of the repair mostly has to do with the parts needed. I'm pretty sure that D&D only charges 250 for the labor to do the repair. My first rebuild was close to 1700. But I had almost every part except the input shaft, output shaft and case replaced. My second rebuild was 700 for new synchro kit and a new second gear. They are going to have a hard time in giving an accurate estimate until they can open it up and take a look.
