Default Loose Hurst shift **** problem

So i have a Hurst shift **** on a Ws6store short stick shifter. I love the setup but i've had a few problems with it. When i screw the **** on, in order to get it tight, the "H" logo is actually upside down and i cannot make that last rotation to get it to sit normally. So it's basically a half turn away from being tight, so when i'm shifting sometimes it will turn and come loose. Anyone had this problem?

Also, i've noticed there is a strange rattle coming from down there that i didn't notice before i installed the shifter. I found that if i apply force on the shifter in any direction, i can alter the sound or make it go away completely. Thoughts?

I don't have one, but if it has a locknut you could try putting a couple washers between it.

As far as the rattle, it could be a loose bolt on the shift arm. Check your bolts.

Did the **** come with a jam nut? Your suppose to thread the jam nut all the way down on the shifter, then do the same with the ****, then rotate the **** counter clockwise to position the logo / shift pattern, then back the jam nut into the ****.

I see. I bought it used so it didn't come with a jam nut. Any idea what size it is? I could just buy one at a local store couldnt I?

I managed to get it to work by simply turning the stick around, somehow it's pretty darn tight now. As far as the rattle, all my bolts are tight and it sounds like it's coming below the shifter somewhere. Kind off odd but i remembered i didn't actually notice it until i installed my skip shift eliminator.

Make sure you have that shifter boot completely pinned down and the sound dampening material placed correctly. You could be hearing the transmission through a hole somewhere, because it will sound like that when you dont have that cover on correctly or it has a hole in it.

This is a challenge with this **** - there is no lock nut.

The trick is to get some Teflon tape from any home supply. ($0.99) Wrap it around the threads on the stick maybe 10-ish times and see how it does. If you add or take away wraps around the stick, you will dial in the orientation to be perfect and the tape will tighten everything so you can crank it down and it won't vibrate off.

When I had my MBA Z28 **** I had the same problem and I literally super glued it in place. It didn't set up until I got it where I wanted it. The stuff was strong enough to hold it but not strong enough that when I needed to take it off that I couldn't crack it loose. I did this with a aluminum **** on an aluminum shaft, I don't know if I'd do it with the plastic Hurst **** though.

Jam nuts won't work on this type of handle. The area where a jam nut would contact is leather instead of metal on a normal ****.

Correct. As i said, i managed to get it to fit much tighter by turning the short stick around. I still haven't figured out the sound, it's really not very noticeable unless the windows up and the radio is off.

For the sound, can you take the handle off the car for a while and see if it goes away? (This would confirm its something in the ****.)

I did. The sound is coming from somewhere underneath the car. Like i said, i noticed it immediately after i installed my skip shift eliminator, which doesn't really make sense to me. I suppose i could get under my car and disconnect it to see if it goes away.

Did you tie the eliminator off somewhere? Could be vibrating against something. Could be your trans mount. Does your shifter wobble like hell over bumps?

Ah - I thought the two were related. I did have this problem when I replaced my shifter handle. The bolts got loose and the lock washers were rattling. Did you check this to make sure your bolts are tight on the stick?

You can put a small rubber washer on top of the shifter stick and the **** will make contact sooner and get tight sooner. You can keep messing with thicker/thinner washers until the **** lines up like you want.
