Exclamation Is this a synchro problem or a clutch problem???

First, a little about the car...
  • It's a 2000 (yes, I know it has the junk clutch and hydraulics)
  • It has a Hurst shifter (I have a Pro 5.0 ordered)
  • The car only has 12K miles

Here are the problems...
  • At high rpms (5K+), it will scratch going into 2nd gear when I'm reaming on it. If I take it easy, it goes in nicely.
  • If I'm doing a powerbreak (or whatever you might want to call it), it will never go to 2nd. It'll make this horrible grinding nasty sound, almost as if I blew the tranny (at least that's what my T5 sounded like when I destroyed that).
  • If I don't take it easy to go from 2nd to 3rd, it'll fly right into 5th and make the nasty grinding sound.
  • If I'm slowing down from say, 50mph, and am in like 5th or 4th, and I have the clutch in and try to put it in 1st, it will grind and not go into gear. If I am going like 30mph and try to do the same thing, it'll go into 1st and I can just coast to a stop.

Now, I thought if I changed the DEXIII to Synchromesh, it would take care of these problems, but it didn't. It made normal shifting smoother though. I never had these problems with my 01 Z, so it's really bother me. So does anyone had any ideas?

it does sound like a synchro...sounds like there wearing out...either that or your speed gear..but most likely your synchro...and about the 1st gear downshift....ummm...from 50mph into 1st...thats kinda bad...i remember when i first tryin to do that it had a grinding sound with the clutch disengaged..i asked my tech at work and said that at about 40 the trans is spinning to fast for the synchro to lock on the speed gear..so don't do it above 40...go to 2nd gear...does your trans pop out of gear at anytime...if not it will soon problably when it gets worse...if it does for sure its a synchro..hope this helps a lil..i jus took a course on our trans a month ago...but we had lots of probs like this..and it always was bad synchros...good luck

Nope, never pops out of gear.

As far as going to 1st at 50... I'm just saying when I'm trying to come to a stop. Some people row through all the gears to slow down (that'd be me). Sometimes though, i'm lazy and just want to throw it in 1st and leave the clutch in and slow down.

The car doesn't like to do that from such a high speed even if the clutch is in. If you heel-toe downshift it it may help, but from 50mph I'm not sure anything is going to help. Don't be so anxious to get it in gear, just coast down in neutral and engage into first once you've slowed down a lot.

It's odd because I never really ever drove like that before. I'm just getting to be a lazy person I guess! Time to start rowing through all the gears again.

Besides that, how about the other problems? Synchros? I'm hoping once I get the Pro 5.0 installed, it'll take care of the problem because like I said, I never had these problems with my 01.

the new shifter could help...but i really think its the synchros...it could be jus the synchro teath are getting rounded...won't slind into gear as nice...unless you treat it nicely but i could be wrong...it won't hurt puting in a new shifter...what kinda shifter is in it right now..stock???...but if your gears ever start to pope out...its 4sure synchros...and the shifting down to 1st...yea the car doesn't like it...jus go to 2nd then around 30 or lower then go to 1st...but i really never go 1st... lowest gear i go is 2nd to slow me down and stop...

I've always thought of it this way. Your brakes are cheaper than your tranny to replace...so use em! I sometimes throttle match on downshifts when coming to a stop, or just throw it in neutral and use the brakes.

I never use 1st to slow down, it's just added stress on your tranny. It sounds insane to some but just use second or higher like badazz said, and use the brakes.

As for the tranny, it sounds like synchros for sure. I know you just got this car, did the place you get it from give you a warranty? I'm guessing no, which sucks.

The new shifter isn't going to help, it has to be your synchros Take it into your dealer and have them replaced (if your dealer is any good) Otherwise, I'd think about having it sent out to a performance shop and have a few things upgraded. The cars only got 12k on it and the synchros or gone?

Personally I never use the transmission to slow the car to a stop. I have slowed the car in gear when running on a nice curvy road, but never in just general driving around. I would much rather wear the brakes.

You guys don't understand what i'm saying. I'm not putting the car in gear to slow it down. All I am doing is putting the clutch in, and leaving it in. It's the same as putting the car in Neutral and just coasting. I just put it in a gear and leave the clutch depressed.

And yes, the car has 12K miles, which really bothers me why the synchros would be shot already. I'm guessing the previous owner was a real bone head.

Oh, I tried to put mine in first at about 35 one time, while coasting to a stop, an it ground a little. I just decided to never do that again. I wait till I am stopped to select first.

Default don't put it into 1st above 35 no matter what

it doesn't matter if the clutch is in or out...the trans is spinning to fast for the synchro to slide over the 1st speed gear...thats y u hear a grinding sound...disengaged or not...its bad...it wears the sh*t out of the synchro.
