Default Noise when leaving in first????

Just like the title says, I'm hearing a strange rattle when leaving in first gear. The amount of throttle doesn't seem to make a difference overall, but I have managed to take off in a way that it makes less noise. That is the only time I'm hearing the noise. Stock clutch (as far as I know), stock T56. Maybe a TO bearing? Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Car has 60K miles.

Does the sound occur as you are releasing the clutch pedal? Does it go away with the pedal fully released? Do you hear it any other time?

Yes, yes, and no. That is the only time I hear the noise.

Sounds like the pilot bearing from what you're describing, if that's the case I would get it replaced ASAP as it could do damage to the input shaft of the trans.

If it is the pilot bearing would I be seeing other symptoms?

Are you sure its related to the clutch?

Try going as slowly as possibly in first without stalling and gradually accelerate. Of the 2 T56s I've had, both have a rattle/ growl between 0-5mph speeds and its very noticeable. Apparently its a very common issue with T56s.

It is pilot bearing based on your answers above! You don't inherently have to see other symptoms, but you can experience things like difficulty shifting which mirrors the issue of a dragging clutch.

Bringing this back from the dead.... I am getting ready to drop the trans to replace the clutch, is there anything I should check while I have it down to make sure nothing is damaged? What do I look for while it's out?

Replace your pilot bearing and slave with throw out bearing. If you dont replace the slave than at least replace the throw out bearing. My pilot bearing looked like this.

You can get a tool from Auto Zone to pull the bearing with a slide hammer. it takes about 5 mins to remove it. Then It will look like this....

Just use a small block of wood and a hammer to knock it back in.
Also check you input shaft to make sure its not damaged. Mine was but had it fixed when I had my transmission rebuilt by Tick.

I would get new GM flywheel bolts and use red loctite on them.

Be sure to torque everything to spec, and if you should have any questions PM me. Hope it helps.

Thanks!

I plan on replacing everything while it's down, I was more asking what to look for on the input shaft to see if I damaged it. Thanks again!

A bad input shaft will look like this.

I didn't take a pic of mine before I sent it off but it had a good groove on the shaft. The bearing surface should be smooth. I had Tick performance fix it. I also installed a Tick Master cylinder, it is worth the price paid!
