Default Rebuilt T56 grinds 2nd

A friend and I replaced the flywheel, clutch, slave cylinder and rebuilt the tranny last weekend.

2nd gear was finicky before the rebuild, but after it was so much better. It would however shift into 2nd, then the shifter would move forward about an inch when the clutch was fully released.

Last night I went to check everything and noticed one of the four 7mm shifter plate bolts wasn't tightened at all, it was hanging in the breeze. So I tightened it, went for a test drive. 115 mi since all the work done.

Now it grinds into 2nd 98% of the time and pops out of 2nd often.

Any ideas? Car is my DD and I would hate to grind away 2nd because I have to drive the car.

I am having the same problem with my rebuilt t-56 trans. I bought the car a year ago with a rebuilt trans everything works fine but it grinds goin in 2nd about 25% of the time and WILL ALWAYS pop out of 2nd unless I keep it ripped back. I'd also like to figure out what is causing this to happen.

does it do it in any other gears? If not then it sounds like something internal in the trans. Did you use the tremec manual for assembly? Was 2nd gear, the 1-2 slider or anything else replaced

It jumps out of gear due to worn/damaged/broken synchro keys

Typically the grinding is caused by an issue with that gear's blocking ring and friction cones.

Dumb question: what kind of shifter are you using?

We've had customers running aftermarket shifters with the stops incorrectly adjusted that wouldn't fully engage a gear. Easy fix if that is the case - it's worth checking!

It was a "Stage 2" rebuild kit from Hawsthirdgen, (clutch and flywheel were from Tick ).

Stock shifter. My friend (who rebuilt the tranny) also believes it is a shifter stop issue since all other gears are fine.

I think the clutch may be not 100% fully disengaging, will try to rebleed in a few hours.

After a single bleed (had no fluid on hand to replenish for a full proper bleed) it. Can now go/clunk into 2nd if I double clutch it without grinding.

Will still do a proper rebleed soon, but hmmm.

I'd get that trans apart before you cause some real damage. Those gears are really expensive. I spent $1200 on parts rebuilding mine. I spared no expense. It's like a new/better than new trans now.

Usually is a stop is wrong it will be worse in 3rd and 4th and the bolt is centered. Is there slop in the shifter when messing with 1st and 2nd? The carbon blockers are somewhat fragile until installed. IE. carbon coming off the ring from a small knick.

I would get it dropped this weekend but my friends shop is closing. We don't have a press or the tool used to raise/lower the tranny anymore. They have been sold.

It doesn't like going/staying in second amd it whines a bit in only in 2nd as well. I'm actually considering taking it to a good tranny shop to replace my "new" but possibly damaged 2nd syncro.

I realize what it takes to drop/install a tranny having done it 2 weeks ago, but I don't want to pay $500 when I just rebuilt the tranny..

I put my car up on ramps. All 4 and removed the trans solo. It sucks sure but it's possible. I used a low profile jack to lift it into place.

I'm not a body builder either. :-)

x2 i have never used a lift when i pulled mine out just a couple big jackstand in the front and smaller ones out back. after that a regular floor jack and a buddy to help stabilize it.
