What Fluid Do Put In You T-56?
Mine has always had a slight whine to it, so I'm thinking about changing the transmission fluid. I don't know what fluid is in it, if I had to guess, it's a auto parts store house brand.

Tick Performance says to use any brand of non-synthetic DEX 3 ATF. I asked 2 different people Joey and a customer service rep. when I had my transmission rebuilt by them and was told they use parts store brand DEX 3 in their shop, and the paper work that came with the transmission even specifically said never use Mobil 1 or any other synthetic atf.

I did a lot of research on this subject before changing the orig trans fluid in my '99 SS M6 2 years ago (had 13K miles and 13 yrs on it). I stayed with non-synthetic ATF just to be sure there were no compatibility issues with internal parts such as swelling/blinding of the older style, cellulose lined synchronizer friction rings. Better safe than sorry. The ATF works fine. In the 2001-2002's you shouldn't have compatibility issues with the Mobil 1 syntec. I think it's the only synthetic that Tremec recommends for the T56's with carbon blocker rings....and IIRC that's partially because it's the only one they had tested.

dex 3 here , saw posts about issues with the paper blocker rings or something like that with other fluids so stuck with stock fluids.
My t56 as well as engine/rear end are all running unopened stock original internals with 242,000 miles on them and I am trying to go as far as I can go without having to repair any of them lol

Fry has it right in his comments.
your "whine" may be a issue not resolved with a fluid swap.
If your fluid type/life is unknown than change to fresh fluid. I purchased my T56 new in 05 for my 96. it has the non-paper blocker rings since it was manufactured in 2004. IIRC they changed to that around 97-98????
D&D said to use DEX3, not synthetics FWIW
Synthetics and the paper blocker rings did not work out well.

There should be a orange sticker near oil fill plug that says....and in my case it is DEX3. Put in what the fluid says on the tranny. I use store brand DEX3

Yeah FRY
my T56 was new with the carbon blocker rings when I bought it (not a rebuild) and D&D said no synthetic. Didn't say "why" though
But FWIW what the sticker on the trans says...use IMHO.

Mobil 1 is what just about all the Texas Mile guys use. It helps with wear but mostly with heat control. For stock units, cheap old non synthetic Dextron/Mercon 3 works fine.

I havent tried amsoil but only heard good things. i use redline d4 which is in the same class as amsoil and its awesome. I tried synchromesh, castrol, modil and a couple others none shifted like redline. synchromesh can get a bit notchy when cold other than that it was the 2nd best after redline.
heater redline d4 gets my vote, i only recommend it over amsoil as I have used it but honestly they are probably on the same level

I've used Redline before in a different Tremec transmission and it worked great.
Seems like a lot of people like the Synchromesh, so I'm down to it or the Redline. I don't expect to get much of the whine out, but any would be better than none.

ya mines always whined as well and still does lol fluids never changed that. redline just made cold shifting a lot better synchromesh was still a little notchy when first starting up in the mornings. redline took 80% of that away and shifted a little more slick when warm
