Default LT1 T56 on a Big Block?

Somewhere someone posted that you could mount the T56 out of an LT1 car onto the back of a small block chevy (the bell housing). Small block and big block chevys have always had the same bell housing (at least old ones did). So this must mean that the LT1 T56 will mount up to a big block right?

Then there was something about a special flywheel being needed?

in short:

WHAT do I need to do in order to mount a T56 behind my big block chevy? I already have a T10 bellhousing that mounts up to the big block and would like to use it.

thanks

You need a flywheel that will accept a pull style clutch. You have to use the T56 bellhousing, your T10 bell is not going to work. I believe that McLeod is the only company that makes a flywheel with the 2piece rear main seal crank pattern. You BB should have the same crank pattern. Then you have to figure out if your BB is internally or externally balanced. If its a 454 or a 502, then its externally balanced. 396s, 402, and 427s were internally balanced.

Good luck.

Another issue to address here. I believe that most of the BB motors used 14" flywheels. Well the bellhousing for the T56 is designed for the stock 12 3/4 LT1 flywheel. Might need a different starter with the different flywheel.

Most Chevy starters have mount for both the 14"/168 and 12 3/4/153 tooth mounts. So you can use the 153 tooth flywheel on a BB, provided it has the right balance or the lack there of.

There is nothing different between an LT1 Gen II crankshaft and an 86-02 SBC Gen I crankshaft dimensionally.

For a rat you need an appropriately weighted LT1 flywheel in the 2pc. rear main seal bolt pattern (aftermarket) & in 153 tooth size to fit inside the LT1 bellhousing.

Your Lakewood ain't gonna work. An LS1 trans. and the McLeod bellhousing w/ adapter plates will though.

Well, most blocks do. OEM starters are setup for staggered pattern equal lenght bolts (168 tooth wheel) or straight pattern unequal length bolts (153 tooth wheel) There are aftermarket starters that will go onto a staggered pattern but work with a 153 wheel.
