Default What did I do?!!

A feel like an idiot even typing this.

Was driving my '96 TA today and shifted hard into 2nd and then into 3rd...or so I thought. Grabbed 1st by accident, which I've never done in 20 years of driving a stick. Hit limiter and jerked around, but I immediately put in the clutch.

Right away I couldn't even shift into any gear below 5th. Coasted to the light and was able to get it into 1st, but it want easy. Didn't really want to go into 2nd or 3rd either, but I got it in there. Finally loosened up a bit, but still not smooth like it was. Doesn't like to downshift into 2nd, but will go if I force it a bit. Most of all I notice a pretty bad vibration...I can feel it in the clutch and the whole car vibrates when I'm driving, unlike prior to this. It also feels like the clutch is engaging sooner, i.e. closer to the floor than before. Shifts fine into every gear when car is off.

What in the world did I jack up?! Grrr!!

Went for another quick ride in it. Does not like to downshift from second to first - kinda have to manhandle it. As weird as it sounds, it feels like the rear end shudders as I push it into 1st - even with the clutch in. Worst vibration is in second, cruising about 2200rpms. I can go through the hears without issue when the clutch is in and I'm just sitting.

I don't know about your trans issues. I would be more concerned with your motor. How is the oil pressure? Is it still running well?

The PCM rev limiter will not protect the engine from overspeeding when its being back driven by the rear wheels. You could've also blown up the clutch disc.

The engine appears to be fine, but I haven't driven it crazy hard since it happened. Oil pressure is good.

+1. I would bet your clutch came apart and put it out of balance.

I agree, sounds like you blew out part of the disk and or hub and its been thrown out of balance. Time for a new clutch

So...anyone in the Detroit area feel like mentoring someone through a clutch replacement? My goal with this car is to work on these things myself as they arise, but would love guidance if there is anyone nearby!

Is it safe to drive?

I wouldn't drive it unless you have money for a tow bill once it leaves you stranded.

I'm not driving it. Just waiting for divine inspiration as to how best to proceed. I fear I'll drop the tranny and get to the clutch only to find it was something totally different!
