Default T56 gear ratio change

Hey guys. I've been pondering the possibility of changing the gear ratios in my 2002 ss, to the ones from the c5 z06. At first glance, the z06 ratio spread seems more evenly distributed.

Anyone try this or have any knowledge as to how the drivability would change? I know all the gears would be shorter except for 4th. I have 4.10 gears in the rear right now. However the combination of the z06 gears and 3.73 in the rear end seems ideal.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

IMO the T56 gearing 1-4 is primo.... 5th being .75 is tall and .50 5th is simply there for economy.

If your trans works.... sell it... buy a T56 Magnum which has the same 1-4 gears; however .80/63 5th and 6th. It shifts light years better than your trans ever could even rebuilt.

You need 2 main things to swap it in:
shorten the dshaft and add a 31 spline yoke
move the shifter back about 3" which is achieved via a shifter upgrade

* the trans mount is in the same position
The tailshaft doesn't have a provision for a torque arm... so you would need an aftermarket one (ie BMR etc).

By the time you spent the money to regear the rear diff, do a custom set of gears in your trans.... the Magnum will come out ahead in cost and shifting quality.... plus can EASILY handle 700rwhp. I'm pushing about 1400hp thru mine.... and it is 100% stock.

Wow ok ya that's way too much work. Selling the Trans and buying a magnum seems a bit overkill for a mild annoyance. I'm dropping the engine to get the bottom end rebuild and while the Trans was out, I was hoping the gear spline and sizing and position was all the same. Wishful thinking hahhaa. Clearly isn't possible.

However I discovered the tranzilla made by Rockland standard gear. The 2.29 first gear option seems ideal. Has anyone had experience with this Trans? I really don't need the 1000 ft lbs of torque capacity, so I'm going to ask them if it's possible for them to send me just the gears or just the main shaft with gears attached

so it seems to me the most ideal set up would be 2.29, 1.60, 1.21, 1-1 for 1-4 on the main shaft and then 0.84, 0.56 from a z06 on the aux shaft (assuming it will fit). I'm ok with 6th being super overdrive since i really only use it for highway cruising.

anyone have any experience changing the gears or getting a trans with different ratios?

thanks

It's a major pain in the *** to change the gears. You are stuck with either gear set, you can't mix and match. Tick offers a rebuild option using the .79 fifth gear from the cobra, but the damn thing costs as much as getting a new magnum, which is better in every way.

D&D performance makes a drop in f-body magnum with the gearing you want. Price is reasonable considering the other options out there. If your current t56 is in good shape, it can be sold for good money to help offset costs.

Ya it seems to be too much to do right now. Maybe later down the line but for now I'll stick with what I have
