Default Clunking sound?

Might need to post this in the gear and axle section but i'll try here first b/c to me it seems like suttin to do w/ my tranny. First off, whenever i'm stopped at a light or stop sign and shift into neutral to wait for green, i go to shift back into 1st and w/ the pro 5.0 its that kinda notchy feel so right before it slips into gear you can feel the little bit of resistance..well right when i get to that part, no matter how easily i try to slide it into first....i hear this faint clunk, just one, and once its in first and shifting through the rest of my gears it doesnt do it. Any ideas? Second, more towards gears but for example if i'm rolling down a hill and i shift into neutral i hear a faint knocking in the rear of the car....almost like the teeth of the gears arent meshing properly and they are hitting into each other, if this is the case how do i fix it? I checked fluids and changed them at the beginning of the season, its a faint knocking and only happens SOME OF THE TIME when i am rolling below 40mph in neutral. Any ideas at all appreciated. thanks all.

put the p-brake on and trans in N then turn the ds and see how much play you have in the rear and ds.

And what would that determine? U joints is a good call, how do i check if they are whats causing it? I owned a 92 mustang way back when and the entire thing was twisted from the juice the guy was feeding it that owned it before me...and one day i was getting off the highway after along drive, and threw it in neutral as i was rolling up the off ramp, doin about 40 down to 0 and i and my passengers heard this horrible knocking noise in the back end of the car just like what i hear now in the Camaro except its soooo faint that my passengers dont here it yet...never found out what it was in the mustang b/c i sold it a week after but b/c it had juice running through it i would imagine it was suttin serious. Thats why i wanna nip this in the rear before it gets noticable from random people who know nothing about cars. When i see how much play i have in the ds and rear...how much is normal? Last time i tried it i was able to turn it a good 1/4 inch side to side total. Are u joints hard to fix?

it should have atleast a 1/4 inch, thats normal.
stock u joints have to be heated with a torch to be removed.
unbolt the d.s and take it off the car add see if the ujoints are tight or if they have some slack in them. then turn the rear where the d.s bolts to it and see if there is excessive play in the gears.

Ok will try that tomorrow, and i'm guessin i'm pretty screwed in terms of a rear end being shot if there is excessive play in the gears? Or is it still driveable till next season when i will buy a new rear anyways?

my work truck has had excessive gear play for the past 80kmiles if its bad, just keep sticky tires off of it and dont do big cluth dumps. its probably not bad though or you would notice it alot worse if that is what it is.
might be in the trans, just eliminate easiest things first.

sometimes cluking is caused by the rear rotors twisting back forth on the axle studs due to the play in them when you let off friction slide them one way and when you stand back on it it clunks them the other way, i have seen this on a few different cars before.

Thats a thought, i know for sure i need a tranny mount, when i get on the car i get banging under my center console and there is a lot of shaking in the shifter, could this contribute to the rear by not keeping the tranny solid and therefore running down the d/s and into the rear or maybe i'm just hearing the noise in the d.s b/c the tranny isnt sitting solid? I'm trying to figure out where to get a good mount...i only have 40 k on the car so i'm pretty suprised that it went this fast.

for being under $25 for the mount its WELL worth it!

you dont really need instructions, just for the torque specs.

http://www.installuniversity.com/

its easy, support the trans with a jack, unbolt 4 crossmember bolts, center transmount bolt, drop crossmember, unbolt 2 13mm bolts holding mount, remove mount, install new mount, put crossmember back on, torque everything down.

yeah it all depends, the trans mount is easy, but when i did my lcas, between trying to figure out how they go together to all the nuts being on there soo hard, not having the right size wrench, to the lca's just not fitting right, it took a lot longer than i wanted to, like 3 hours(including trip to tool store), did it again on my friends car just recently, took like 30min, his had less miles and the rear was new and i knew how to get the greece fittings in, was cake.
