Default Buy used T56 or Build a F body T56 from a Corvette?

I think I have decided to bite the bullet and buy a T56. Most T56s I see around in my area go for about 1500. My concern is buying a pos, for that price.
Can you pull off the mid plate and be able to look at the blocker ring gaps, and look at the engagement teeth? Or should I buy a Core T56 from a Corvette, and switch it over?

Thanks.

You might want to have something like "I know I will need to add $X for ABC and D mods needed to retrofit the vette trans. to slip-yoke and tailhousing shifter" or you're comparing two very different starting points. If you have no spare parts and little trans. building experience, saving for a T56 Magnum (a TR6060 inside) is a wise option.

I know I need a, mid plate, bellhousing, main shaft, tail housing, shift rail, and a good chance, 2nd, 3rd, blocker rings, dog keys, sliders, ect, $$$$. That's why I'm really on the fence what to do, cause saving up for the magnum wont happen, to much $ to come up with, now I know why alot of guys have a 4l80e.

You get what you pay for.... the shifting smoothness of a Magnum cannot be compared with a '98-02 Fbody.... or GTO style T56. Those were also designed in the early 90's.

I'm pushing 1400hp thru a 100% stock Magnum. Drives amazingly nice with shifting that rivals many European manual transmissions for smoothness.

Remember that many parts (gears etc) for the older style T56 are becoming obsolete with unknown fulfillment times... and offshore (Taiwan) being the solution. Making parts for those older T56's isn't Tremec's priority.

If you're starting from nothing, it really doesnt make much sense to buy an old junk T56 and throw more money at it.
Unless perhaps you get it for almost nothing.

And as above, parts can be expensive and hard to come by. I just destroyed 5th gear in two of them FFS, and parts just to repair the 5th gear parts in one box came close to $1000.

Not money well spent, but still unsure where to go next and needed it fixed so I can use the car for now.

If starting from nothing, T56 Magnum. If you have a core already, a rebuild is a good place to start, or buy an LT1 T56 and convert it over to LS style, since the LT ones can usually be had for next to nothing.

Most LT1s T56s go for $1000.00 plus around me, plus parts to swap over. I have a lead on a TKO 500, for $1500 with 10k miles, after watching some youtube videos of the Magnum, I'm about to bite the bullet, try to save half of the money up, and charge the rest.

Thanks.
