Good morning!
I have a 2004 GTO with a healthy whine in 5th and 6th gear only. It goes away when I clutch in and goes away in any other gear. I've read that this could be the countershaft bearing. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can the bearing be replaced with the trans in the car and only removing the tailhousing? Any input is appreciated!![Happy](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif)
Thanks,
Adam

Yes. No.
It needs rebuilt and especially inspected at all the failure points common to 5-6.
Not "taken apart in the driveway and fix what I think is wrong because that's all I feel like taking apart."
Parts of 5-6 which vibrate to failure can negatively impact parts of reverse from staying properly installed, and by that point, the 5-6 vibrations start hurting more $ in 5-6 / R parts than what it would have cost if addressed when first observed.
