Default Short Shifter Recommendation

Hi,

Recently I discovered that my factory Hurst shifter has crumbed internally. Time to order a new shifter. I am looking for recommendations. This is a street car but is good for a few trips to the drag strip every year. The MGW seems to be a crowd favorite but I have read a lot of posts indicating that it is notchy. The throw also seems a bit too short for my liking. I'd like to see some opinions from those who have used multiple shifter brands. For me, the most important factor is the smoothness of the shifting. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Randy

I've used the Hurst Billet (aftermarket) shifter since I purchased the car in '99. It's been really smooth (not notchy), but I suppose that smoothness comes at the expense of some shift accuracy. I would probably not use this shifter for racing, but its been just fine for street driving.

After 20 years of use, it started to get soft. I was able to pop in Hurst re-build springs for around $20 and 5 minutes of my time and it feels like new. The Billet Plus is all metal inside and has been really durable. Only those springs need to be serviced and they can be replaced with the shifter on the car.

After reading a dozen threads on the subject, I went ahead with the MGW. Planning to shim the detent as well. Hopefully the end result is as good as what everyone on the board suggests.

The detent mod helped a lot. I'm sure you will like MGW.

Nice, I assume you have done it? 1 washer or 2 washers? I'm planning on 2.

I bought the Hawks shifter a while back....no complaints about it and it was fairly cheap.

2 years later and I've decided to install the factory Tremec shifter (came with my Magnum F) into my car and it is soooo much smoother. Much better for street driving IMO. The MGW never loosened up and was too notchy for my liking. The MGW also transmitted a ton of noise into the cabin! I will point out that the MGW is superior in racing applications. Never missed a shift.

Keeping the plastic cup buishing helps reduce noise vs the brass bushing.

How much different is the length of the shifts when comparing the Tremec to the MGW?

I have the Tremec shifter now, and have been trying to find information comparing the length of the shifts with other popular offerings (MGW/Tick/etc.), and found nothing. I love how the Tremec shifter feels, but with how tall I needed to make the shifter lever (~10"), I wanted to see if there was a shorter shifter.

The shift is twice as long with the Tremec compared to the MGW. I think cutting the factory stick down would help but the kink in the factory shifter lever prevents much more than a 1" cut. Also, I think it's worth noting that the rubber isolator (circled below) on the factory shifter really helps reduce NVH and makes for a more street friendly driving experience.

Good to know! I was kind of hoping you'd say its the same throw haha. I do have some NVH that comes through mine without an isolator. I installed rubber shims between the shifter and lever last summer, and it greatly reduced the NVH, but I kept having problems with the bolts coming loose.
