Default Found chip on 6th gear

So I discovered a couple chips on my 6th gear on the countershaft extension. Thoughts?

Would probably run fine forever, no one jams a trans into 6 anyway. That being said, if its already apart...

I'm asking cause I've got a high pitched whine in 5/6 (already replaced the mainshaft and cluster) and the trans is bucking when coasting in 5 or 6. Wasnt sure if the chips here could cause that.

Transmissions don't buck. As for the whine, it's possible.

If you can isolate the cell in your VE and spark tables where it is bucking, take a smudge of fuel out and add some spark. No real fear of knocking at light load. There is no cylinder pressure

That damage, is maybe from a previous trauma the trans has seen ? Some residual damage not repaired at that time.

But it's 6th...never worry about it. Any "bucking" issues are more likely tune.

Bucking is probably an incorrect term to use. What is happening is that in 5th or 6th (and only in these gears) when I am coasting I'm getting a loud... "thumping" noise, for lack of a better term, that I can feel and hear through the shifter. And the car jerks slightly, as if I was tapping on the brakes.

Only other mod I've done was an adjustable torque arm.

That gear should be smoothed out and reinstalled. Inspect the syncro engagement teeth, if they're good use it. That gear is in no way causing any problem that you've described.

A gear chipped like that could cause a thumping sound as it rotates but that's it. It could have been caused by poor handling at teardown/ rebuild of something / debris going through the mesh in operation. If from debris, there should be a witness marking ( or other chips ) on the driven gear. You could clean up(grind with a die grinder) around the chips to relieve any high spots of the tooth. This should reduce the thumping/noise.

Appreciate all of the input guys. Ended up getting a new 6th gear at a decent price. I figured it would be cheap insurance (and I'm never gonna beat on 6th anyway).

I had one question about 5th though. In an effort to isolate my issue I put some gear marking compound on the gears to take a look at the mesh pattern. This is what I got:

Thoughts? Looks kinda high and narrow to me.

And you did this test with the trans loaded, and all casings fully installed ? ie so all bearings and shafts are in an as used state ?

Trans was almost fully assembled. Just missing reverse and the parts above it on the mainshaft. But bearings were installed and measured for correct endplay, extension housing was installed, bolted, and torqued. I loaded the shaft as best I could, threading a bolt into the end of the mainshaft and using a wrench to simulate a load while i turned the input by hand.

Well I think i figured out my issue. Spinning the transmission by hand counterclockwise with 5th engaged I can hear what sounds like the teeth not engaging correctly. A faint rattling noise. Shift to 6th (the gear I just replaced) and the noise goes away.

I got basically all of my parts from Amp Distributing. Seems like the 5/6 cluster isn't happy with my factory gears. Gonna call them tomorrow to see what they say.
