Default T56 2nd gear grind

I just noticed this week that my t56 is starting to grind going in 2nd anytime above 4000 rpms. This happens on a up pr down shift. Everything else seems to be fine, I tried changing the fluid and bleeding the clutch but that didn't help. This is a gto t56 in my ls swapped chevelle. Is there anything else that I should check before I yank it out?

Shifts OK under 4000 rpm?? I mean like just easy shifting under normal driving conditions...???

Yes it shifts fine under normal conditions into 2nd, but at higher rpms it will grind before going in 2nd.

Mt GTO T56 did the same thing when the synchros were done. 2nd gear started grinding and only at high rpm. You can try a thicker trans fluid but it will be more notchy at low rpm, cold driving conditions. Trans fluid is always a give and take between those two conditions in a T56. A rebuild will be in order at some point and there might be some long lead time items that need to be replaced so you might want to call around ahead of time to make sure whoever is rebuilding it (including yourself...) will have everything once its torn down.

I actually just checked Hawks Motorsports for rebuild stuff and it looks like you are in luck. The outer 1st/2nd gear synchro was rare as hens teeth for a while but it looks like they started making repro parts. You will notice the repro is $65 versus the Tremec one is almost $400!

Thanks, I went ahead an ordered a Magnum f close ratio to replace this transmission. I wanted to make sure that the issue is the transmission before I yank it out.

I installed a M12 06 GTO t56 that was supposed to be "OK" in my wagon, same symptoms as yours. I took it back out tore it down, all the synchros were marginal, second was toast.

$500 dollars worth of triple cone synchros later, and all is good again...

What did you pay, if you don't mind me asking for the trans?

Thanks.

Oh, you were asking about the gto t56, I paid 3k for a complete pull out a couple of years back. The $3395 was for the new magnum f t56
