I don't see how it would be installed backwards as the mounting bolts are not long enough with the bulk of the slave in the way to mate it to the transmission. Now if you mean rotated in the wrong position, 180 degrees opposed, I suppose that would be possible but clearance of the bleeder valve and input line most likely would not fit.
Either of the above, it would not work of course because it would not be able to connect the line to the master.
Here is what my slave looked like when I replaced it, this is how it would look bolted to the transmission if you were on your back looking up at it, the bleeder/input line are to the top right about 2:00 o'clock position, the notch in the bell housing lets you know where it needs to be. The OEM line has the restricter installed on the master cylinder side but it is connected to the line with a roll pin setup and cannot be installed in reverse. The Tick Performance adjustable I installed uses a threaded line nut on the master side and the OEM style connector on the other and they were not interchangeable. The Slave side has the slide with retainer clip and I haven't seen any master cylinders that use a similar connection. I am not seeing how the line could be reversed as the connections on the ends are unique.
