What should I expect to pay for a T-56 that has gears out on it and needs a rebuild. He said the casing is perfect just the internals need to be re done. What kinda price should I offer him?

I wouldn't go any higher than $300 on a "core" T56 (that "needs parts"). You never know what you're going to find inside.
For example, what happens if you open it up, and find it needs new 1-2 and 3-4 sliders ($130 each), a new mainshaft ($200), a new 5-6 driven gear ($100), a synchro kit ($200), snap rings ($15), maybe a new gear ($150) and that's doing the work yourself... see where I'm going? It's *easy* to put $1k in new parts in to a T56. Of course, after this is done, it's like new but I consider a fully fresh T56 (homebuilt) to be worth ~$1200. So my goal (with my trannies) has been to try to bring it in for less than that.
